"I could stay with him once he was in front, and 1 already had the lead again before he fell." By th e time Vohland fell , Ev e rt s, Werner Dewit and Yves Demaria h ad closed righ t u p on him. Dewit was also to su ffer. "I fe lt good , " said Dewit. " I had come past Bartolini, Beirer and Demaria, but I was committed to the line Tallon fell onto. I los t the train and had to settle for fourth." D emaria pushed Evert s hard for many laps before accepting defeat. "After those first two disastrous GPs I needed a finish for my confidence, so I backed off on the last two laps," said Demaria. Eve rts was not too upset at the end of his victory run. " I didn 't know h o w I w ou ld la st physi cally afte r m y recent sic kness," said Everts. "In the end I still felt fres h at the en d of that fi rs t m ot o . I on ly dropped three points." The champion was less content after fin ish ing 10th in race tw o, es pecia lly after his main title rivals both took full ad vantage. "I just didn't gate well," said Everts, "But the dust w as a problem in the pack as the sun got low er, and I w asn' t feeling so good either." Be rvoets took a clear h olesh ot , bu t aga in VohIand had the -speed . This time the Am erican was in charge. ' "When I got in front I just conce ntrated on riding the track and put the other ride rs ou t of my mind," Vohland sai d. "I think I let them get to me in the firs t race and th at's why 1 tens ed up. Tha t w in was important. There's not mu ch in the points, an d n ow I ca n go to the nex t races knowing I am the fastest." Bervoets was retrospe ctive. "I wasn't wo rried w hen Tallo n came past again," sa id Bervoets. "I m ade the m is t ake of th in k in g he wou ld fade again like in th e first moto, however, and didn't push him too hard at first. Wh e n I realized he was not go ing to sta rt m akin g mi st a k e s, I s t a r te d a charge, but I m ad e a mist ake m yself. I was only down for a cou ple of seconds, bu t h e wa s gone, a nd I jus t h a d to accep t se cond in th e m ot o and the GP win." Dewi t was agai n impressive for third. "I caug ht up to Marn icq at one poin t, but it is always more d ifficult to attack your teammate forcefully and I settled into a speed," said Dewit. " It was difficu lt to p ick it up aga in when Herring started to close near the end." Rob Herring, so long th e enigma of the GPs bu t so often injured in recent years, was happy with fourth . "It's a lon g time since I was that near the fro nt," sa id Herring. "I might have had th ird, but Dewit is a crafty rider. 1 decid ed to settle for fourth after making a m istake over a tabletop two laps from the end ." Beirer was again in th e top six but had to admit that his home GP had not gone as well as he had hoped. "My team didn't put me under pressure, but 1 was too anxi ou s to do reallv well here today," said Beirer. "I started making litt le mi stakes early in the first race and tried to o vercome them b y even m or e commitment. Th at was a mistake because I ju st tensed up; got arm-pum p an d couldn' t find the lines. The only good laps I rode all day were th e last four a fter I fel l. I loosen ed up and it was n o problem to repass Bartoli- Everts had a bad day. The champ ion lost ground to his title rivals after card ing a disappointing 10th In moto two and fourth overall, but he still has an 11-point lead over Bervoets . ni. O ne more la p and 1 would h a ve had Belley too." . Demari a 's sa d season continued. The Frenchm an didn't even make a lap. " H e caught his left b oot in a hol e and has s tretched the a nkle ligamen ts, " exp lai ned team b oss Michele Rinaldi.
