This AR H1\.fA National event weekend kicked off on Friday with road ra ce practice and a race school with Team Obsolete's Dave Roper as proctor. I Think I Can Racing's Todd H en ning, the East Coast nightm are, was flown ou t for th e event to haunt th e competition just as h e d id this yea r at Da ytona. H enn ing p icked u p w here he left off, racing in four of the 12 races on the day. He began by winning race on e, the 350cc Sportsman class aboard a lightning-fast 1968 H on d a 350. The 500cc Sports man race featu red a m ixed bag of machines. Ralph Auer was ab oa rd a 1960 BMW 500 and di d h is bes t to keep the '68 Honda of H enning hon est. But on ce aga in it w a s th e 350 o f Hennni g across the st ripe first, followed b y Au er a n d 7 1 BSA 500SS-m ounted Pa u l Sh oe n. With no time to rest , H ennin g was back onto th e track, thi s tim e aboard an ' 8 1 Ya m aha 35 0 in the Battl e o f th e Twins Tw o-Stroke eve n t. Chalk up win numbe r th ree for Henning . D e fend in g champion Step hen Mathews once again put his Barber Motorsport '61 Mat ch les s 500 heads u p against the '68 Hon d a 450 of Henn in g . Mathews on the p o le was flying toward tum one, but going into turn tw o H e n n in g stuffed the 4 50 in hard to take the le ad . The race for the win wou ld be between these two as they q uickly d ist a n ced th emselves from the pack. . "It was like we were tied tog e th er with a rubber band," H enning said later.
