SATSUM,\, FL, MAR. 5-6
In a week filled with rain outs and delays, Bike
Week '96 proved quite a tria l for the AMA Pros,
but the Florida sunshine wa s in abund ance at
River City Speed way on Tuesd ay and Wedn esda y, March 5 and 6, for the ope ning rounds of
the VDTRA di rt track series where Mike Ragan
romped home w ith the Pro-tw ins victory,
The half-mile, banke d, clay su rface pro ved
id eal for action-packed vintage racing. Whil e
fast heat races and ma ins were the order of the
day for all classes, the Pro-twins again served up
the best shows of the meet.
The Yamah a-mou nted Ragan proved himself
to be a man on a mission as he powe red into the
lead both d ays, taking the wins flag-to-flag . In
Tuesday's main event, Steve Longo got by John
Blackstock in a race-long due l for second whil e
George Rich tmeyer wo rke d h im self from a
third -row pena lty start all the way u p to fourth
in a thrill ing effort . John Vanderkooi round ed
ou t the top five with a solid performance. Tuesday' s Pro-twi n main was trul y a national affair
as of the 12 riders entered only two were from
the same state - New York.
Wedn esday' s Pro-twi n main was a repeat for
Ragan and Ste ve Lon g o w ith Johnn y Isaacs
moving into th ird and Vand erkooi fourth. James
Vaugh t had a good run going on "his Triumph
from seventh up to fifth, bu t slid down on the
slippery surface on lap six to spo il a fine effort.
John Hildebrand and John Fike filled ou t the top
six places.
[ac Donald of Winter Park, Colorad o, scored
a do ub le-double taking both 600cc Ama teu r and
Open-Twin mains both days.
Lon gtime 600cc Pro rid er Ton y Neill raced
his Yamah a to twin wins while Fred 5chritt and
Bill Burr trade d Masters wins, Schritt made a
tremendous effort to get by Burr on Wedn esd ay,
but 5chri tt's Triu mph was not up to the Yamaha
po wer of Burr' s big tw in . The tw o ne arly 60yea r-old men p u t on qu ite a show, and if the
tra ck anno u ncer hadn 't given their ages away,
one wo uld hav e thought much you nger lion s
were scrapping.

A smokin' CCS opener at
Heartland Road Race
By Bob Applegate
TOPEKA, KS, MAR 23-24
Iow a h ot sh oe Mik e Murp h y reiu rn ed to h is
home track, Heartland Park Topeka, to pick up
three convinci ng wins and a chunk of chan ge
from Kawasak i at the CCS road racing seaso nopene r.
After a rough season in 1995 the former top
endurance racer was in rare form as he beat u p
both the Heavyw eigh t Sup ersp or t an d Sup er bike classes, win ni ng on hi s Kaw asaki ZX6.
After an ear ly d ice with Minn esota's Steve Johnson, Murph y rounded out his tri ple win with a
great ride in Middleweigh t Sup ersport.
Th e Un limi ted GP race ha d everyo ne on
their feet as Mu rphy gri dded the 600 up against
the region's top big-bore machines and Tomm y
Gerard 's su pe rfast Kaw asak i. Murph y jumped
ou t to an early lead, atte mp ting to build a cush ion quickly in the six-lap race. Colorado 's Mark
Shellinger had other plans and wor ked his usual
stra tegy of hanging back un til the end was near .
Murphy, who has the twisty portions of Heart land Par k's newly config u red 2.1·mile course
d ialed better then anyone, work ed his lead hard.
Shellinger closed up the gap and mad e the pass
go ing onto the lon g front stra ight, pulling th e
trigge r on the massive Yam aha 1000 to take his
second wi n of the weekend after stea ming the
Solo GTO crowd on Satu rda y.
Relative newcomer Scott Ackerman will be
an amateur to watch in '96 as he took both GTO
and GTU win s on his Clifford Cycles-sponsored
Honda 600.
Multi-time champi on Tom Girard kicked off
his '96 seaso n with a pair of wins over fast local
Shane Clark, who test ified th at Gerard 's ZX6
with the now-legal for Supersport one-mil-over
motor was "super fast." Girard took his Don &
Roy's Motorsports /Mason Stud ios Kawasaki to
the head o f th e class in bot h GTU and Mid dleweight Sup ersport, earni ng $500 in Kawasaki
contingency to boot.
