I bought my first Triumph (a 1970 500 Daytona) in London in 1971 as an eager 16-year-old. Two days later, I was on the continent, and Europe on $10 a da y was beyond my budget. I'd ride out leisurely ev e ry day, until the scoo t wen ton reserve, then I'd find fuel and a cam pground and roam the local attractions. It sounds like Triumph has come up w ith a bike that's perfect for that kind of kinder, gentler touring and it makes me w ant to discuss what the budget ca n bear with my wife. Now, if they'd only make it available with those ugly, black, bulletproof massive luggage rack s you used to be able to get in London. I've still go t mine; it lasted longer than the Da y tona a nd is gra cing its fou rt h machine. Eric Lundquist 102521.1306@compu serve.com Winston writes I'm writin g in response to the 883 Slayin g in the April 17 edition and other past papers concerning the banning of 883s. Right now, the 883 class is one of the best things happening in dirt track racing. Dirt trackers are getting introduced to AMA Pro Racing and getting to race aga inst great racers like Jay Springsteen and other h igh-caliber National numbers through the 883 class. One reason this is possible is because it is easier to find help or sponsorship racing 883s, since there are many Harley-Davidson dealers hip s out there to ask for help or sponsorship. It's also easy for H-D dealerships to help 883 dirt tra ck ers - up and co m ing or a lready established - because they can get parts for cost and they ha ve mech ani cs right there on site. An other th ing, th e 750 and 883 lap times are less than two seconds apa rt so that's not exactly slow. I think the 883 class is gre at and so do many othe r racers and fans. But don 't ge t me wrong, I think Ron Wood and the 600cc class is great too. What is wro ng wi th running all three classes? Tha t would make everyone happy and would be exciting for the racers an d the fans . Joe Winston III Rive rside, CA I-< 0.. Having followed Dam on Brads haw's career throughout the years it was a pleasure to look back on all those exciting mom en ts he's provided for the sport of motocro ss. When Damon Brads haw retired from professional motocross at the end of the 1993 season, I was shocked and d isappointed. I've been hardly racing dirt track locally in Southern California, but would eagerly like to do mo re or change to another sport - I can't be young for lon g. Chris Campos ccampos@csupomona.edli As a longtime off-road rider/racer, I am extremely fond of your publication. I have been rea ding Cycle News since 1970 and consider my Thursday mail delivery an event to anxiously look forward to every week. As the fath er of two young children, I have n oticed the quotes from some of the racers are often littered with vulgarities. I am not a prude by an y sense, but I do not believe these p articular words belong in a publication that is enjoyed by many young people. As a s p o r t in n eed of an ima g e enhancement whenever possible, I don't understand why th e rac ers, and you r magazine, feel it necessary to fuel the negative imag e th at this great sport often receives. The perception that the sport is only for blue-collar, uneducated, crude people is only fortified when these quotes appear in print. I am embarassed for the sport, for the quoted individual and for your magazine each time I read an article with this type of language. The words themselves . do not offend me, bu t the placement of on with a wi de these words in a pub audience like yours is not appropriate. I will re main a participant in the sport, and a su bscriber to yo ur fine ma gazine , but I have li ttle respect for th e p eople who use this lang uage in interviews and for your magazine for "glorify ing" this language by puttin g it in print. You d on't see these words in mo st magazines and the reas ons are obvious. Why n ot take a .hi nt from t he more m a ins tre a m m ed ia and m ake yo u r quotes mo re selecti ve? I was pleased that TNN carried the Daytona 200 and hope that it wa s profitable enough to hav e them continue their coverage. However, inserting three minutes of commercials wi th five laps to' go was a low-elass mov e. Oh, it feels good. Excuse me , but look who's back - Erv Kanemoto! Special kudos for the photos by Gold & Goose - they are beautiful. How about some color? I'll pay extra. In addition, ESPN seems to h a v e im p roved the time slots for the GPs. Well, we'll see if what's in print actually gets on the air . They've even improved their delay time. Let's give them credit, if they so deserve it. We'v e give n them' enough grief and apparently it worked. Mic hael Panelo Santa Clara, CA had dedicated the ir whole life to something just quit? Looking back on it, I'm glad Damon chose to say "bum out rather than fade out." In an era when many young sports and entertainment stars end up having run-ins with the law, it was good to see Damon ha ve the courage to do what was best for his situation. I'm excited that the "Beast from the East" is back racing and up to speed . I wish him the best for the rest of his racing career.
