counted. on for being two races in one, and this year wa s no exce ption. As usua l, the first loop was a -l l -m ile " time keeper" wh ile the seco nd circuit was the rou ghest, most technical. 45-mile desert race you would ever care to parti cipate. Loop one was extre mely fast , eve n for Gold Rush stan d ar d s, wi th speed avera ges ra nging from 20 to 30 m p h . Th e d ras tic elevat io n changes were all saved for the second loop, but winding trails thr ough sand washes and desertfloor brus h kep t riders pushing to stay on time. The top rid ers zeroed the first loop wh ile a large percen tage of the A and B riders carded. a 1 or 2. The seco nd loop was noth ing short of treacherous. Ev e ry long, s te e p, rocky uphill was imm ed ia tely follo wed by a n eq ua lly di fficult d o wnh ill , and there we re lit e ra ll y d ozens gro upe d back to back . The course fina lly flat tened ou t abo u t 10 miles from the finish, but the rocks and whoo ps weren't exactly a wa lk in the pa rk. Speed ave rages that climbed as high as 48 mph and averaged 25 mph kept riders clip ping at a frenz ied pace, to say the least. Ma ttson rod e his IMs / Thor/ FMF / A.cerbis Hon d a CR250 to the overall wi n with a fina l tally of 8.0438. Seco nd ove rall and first A Vet 250cc ho nors went to Jim McGra th and his TM a t 9.0438 . Team Green pu t another rider in the top fiv e w ith Da na Van Stee's 9.0489, good enou gh for fou rth overall and first in the 200cc A d ivisi on . Desert M.C.' s Brent Far rell won the A Open class and rounded out the top five wi th a 10.0518 on his CRSOO. The top B rider was Ishii Masami, who turned in a grea t ride for 19th overa ll.
