Th e b ikes m ust loo k lik e the orig inal b ike - no aftermarket fairing, for example - an d use the original motor. Th is makes for some interesting machinery, and the class is ab solutely awesome to watch. Greg Avery rod e his GSX1100 Suzuki to the win in the first leg with a race time of 9:23 .03 and a fastest lap of 1:32.84 seconds. Si mon Thomas was 2.5 seconds down in second followed by Barry Hartshorne, who raced to a hard-fought third place. The fourth event and the feature race of the morning was the Castrol Formula One IT for unlimited machines up to 1000cc. Trevor Jordan, known for his ability to mix it with the best at the Isle o f Man and Malay sian GP , was the pacesetter in early practi ce. He qualified on his Team Kawasaki Australia ZXR750 more than four seconds faster than the next bike. But after leading off the start, Jordan 's engine dropped a connecting rod on the way up the first hill leaving h im high and dry. That left Hambridge, Wayne Clark and Da ve Cole running at the fro n t of the field . Hambridge rode the wheels of the little 600 to a best lap time of 1:33.08 to win by 2.7 seconds over Clark and Cole, who were 16 seconds away. Waved away 10 seconds after the F-1 bikes, the BEARS racers put on quite a show. On corrected time, Phil Allen finished first in the BEARS event and 10th in the IT after posting a fastest lap of 1:38.05. The boys kept the best for last. Hambridge, Cole and Clarke put on the race of the day. The d ogfight for the title saw the lead change many times betw een the three riders. Th e winner was in doubt right u p to Coca Cola Corner, before Ind ent Ch ican e . Hambridge ran into so me la p ped bikes, got held up and lost the lea d to Cole. Clark e was unable to take adva nt age and had to se ttle for third, m uch to the disgust of Cole, as a third fo r H a m b ri dge would have a llo w ed Cole to take the title.
