EVENTS'.' ap parent Rick Humphreys and Sportsm an leader Cri s Barton . Lucia experienced a rare mech ani cal problem th at sideli ned his efforts early on, but Terry Gerbe r who wa s unlucky in m oto one was making the best of the situation in th e ru n ner-up spot. The Yelkin/ Miller saga continued with the two well-p aired rivals engaged in a game of mechanical chess . This time it was Yelkin 's turn to checkmate Miller's attem p ts w ith hi s Maico 250 and post a third overall finish for the day. Eng rosse d in th e ac tion near th e front no one paid mu ch attention to the stead y march of Tilotta. No one, including race leader Rick Humphreys, wh o had establishe d a "30-som eth ing" second lead wit h only three lap s rema ining. What was by all accounts an insurm ountabl e lea d st arted to m elt faste r than sp ring snow in Deat h Valley. Tilotta had the wick tu rned up for the closing lap s and sprin ted by a casua l-paced Humphreys wit h a half a lap to go. At the checkers it was Tilotta and Barton going 1-1 on the day. Moto two of the 500/125cc races was a carbon copy of the first w ith Doug hty getting the jump on the field and Carter glued to his rear fender. The pace was not iceab ly quicker amo ng th e Mast erclass lead ers as they both se tt led into th e ir ch a racte r of th e ir borro w ed mach in es . Car ter m ad e sever'al inside / outside moves on Dough ty with littl e bu t a grin o f fru stration a n d a sandy roost to sh ow for hi s effo rts. Jam es Tayl or and Lee Clark repea ted their first-moto successes and ended the da y with perfect scores and big smil es. f~ Results Evo lution SO MSTR: 1. Rick Doughty (Mai); 2. Gerber (Kaw ). the hard-charging Lucia. Further back, Rick Yelkin and Skip Miller wag ed their own friendly civil war for the final podium position. The pair diced and sliced their way through the 20-minute moto with Miller edging Yelkin out at the flag . Tilotta and Barton came home as th e first-moto winners in the Masters and Sportsman classes, respectively. The combined 500cc Masters class had an interesting twist this go-around as series points leader Greg Carter was astride a Yamaha 400 and Rick Doughty was fielding a Maico . It seems Carter' s Maico expired in practice after emitting expensive noises from the bowels of the mo tor, so Doughty offered up his YZ400 as a fill-in . Carter's manners were near ly called into question when he almost per formed the unthinkable task of getting the holeshot over his benefactor when the gate fell . But as luck and mighty Maico ho rsepower would have it , Doughty was able to squeeze Carter out as they entered to bowl-shaped turn one. Both Vintage Iron /.Thor/Works Performance-sponsored riders showed little sign of u n fa m ili ar it y with the machi nes they were aboard and quickly pulled clear of the field. (Top) Ron Daniel topped the 125cc Amateurs at the Dry Valley Cross Coun ty near Montague, Texas. (Above) Matt Carpen ter and Jo hn Butler swapped wins In the 125cc Beginner class of California Racing Club 's Sunday Motocross at Los Ange les County Raceway . Carter reeled in Doughty sev er al . times und er braking but could not make a pass stick; in the rough it was apparent that soft suspension was hindering his efforts . The moto ended as it started with Doughty (500cc Master), Lee Clark (500cc Sportsman) and Jam es Ta ylor (125cc Sportsman) in the number-one positions. . . The stage was set for a repeat performance in both the 250cc divisions , but when the pack dispensed with the traditional tum-one bar banging, Mike Tilotta sat alone on the sid e of the track, trying in vain to restart his now-sil ent Husqvarna. It was well over a minute before he could coax the Swedish iron back to life and chase after the longgone crowd. At the helm were Master-class heir best star t to lead the morning race. Hinton was in the lead unti l Joey Marcom took control on lap two . Marcom's 125 cou ld not stand up to the lo ng . sa ndy st ra ig h ts and he re tired wi th a seized motor halfway into lap three. Glen Eiland was also on the move and gladly took the point on lap three . Kenn y Adam s was match ing Eiland's mo ves and saved the best for last, passing Eiland on the last lap to take the win. Eiland wa s a close second while Hinton earned third. Results PRO: 1. G ay Hoe nshdl (Suz ): 2. Mike Abbott (Yam ); 3. Oliver Be nens (SUI.); 4. Donnie McMillnn (KTM ); S. Bryan Coo k (Kaw ).
