METZELER DAYTONA AMA SUPERTWINS Hoenshell also managed to p ass Mashbir, although not as easily as Howerton. "1 was on t he ei g ht-mile ma r ke r w hen 1 came upon Mashbir jus t stan ding in the m id d le of the track," Ho enshell said. "It was real tight with trees, so 1 couldn't get around him. He finally picked up his bike, and in the middle of the track he jumped on it to get it started . I figured I had waited long enough and just plowed through him ." "Going into the fourth lap 1 was still fourth, and I just hi t a wall," Mashbir said. "1 just ran out of energy and started smacking quite a few trees . It started raining, and I was happy because 1 was so hot, and 1 just wanted to take my helmet off and get a little more ventilation going ." The fourth lap of what was meant to be a five -lap race was completed just three m in utes shy of the th ree-h o u r m a r k. The course was tak ing leader Smith an average of 44 minutes per lap to complete, far longer than club officials expected. . "This was the tightest course 1 think 1 have ever ridden," Smith said after winning. " It was like a special test enduro. There was no room to rest, and you had . to sit down a lot. 1 knew no body was ca tching me , and 1 expected to fin ish much farth er ahead than what 1did. " A totally exhausted but ha ppy Dahners finish ed about three minutes behind Smith . . "Th is course was so tight, and you had to watch out for those trees," Dahners said. "They wo uld just rip you off your bike. The most critical section for me was Mossy Rock. I hat e sna kes, and the promo ter was telling me about this big ra ttle sna ke th ey sa w do wn the re. 1 made s u r e that 1 d idn't fall down thr ough there." Brian Garrahan kep t it upright to trail Dahners in a few minutes down the ladder. Howerton came in next, follow ed by Hoen sh ell. Patrick Garrahan stru ggled up to sixth overall ahead of a weary Mashbir, who se ttl ed for seven th. . The 250cc A class was do minated by I S-year-old Blair Bersan o. Th e yo ung Michigander led all the Expert classes for the entire day to claim overall Expe rt honors as well. C'i Brune's Mill Columbus, Texas Resu lts: March 24, 1996 (Roun d 2 of 9) AA: 1.
