The No rthern Californ ian was sim p ly 'u nbeatab le as he ro os te d to victo ry in th e 125, 250 and 500cc Pro cla sses at the fifth an d fin al ro u n d o f th e GFI Ca lifornia Winter Se r ies p r es e nted by th e Ca lifo rni a Motocross Associatio n . And not on ly w as Ryan the man to beat at the Hollister Hill s SVRA Grand Prix track, but the man to beat in the series overa ll - the three class wins laid the final flou rish on hi s ove ra ll se ries victories in all th ree classes. Factory-Suzuki- mou n ted Ro d n e y Smith captured the championsh ip in the Vet Pro class by w inning wit h a perfect score of 150 poi nts. In oth er action, Ryan LoFranco came from beh ind to win in the 250cc Beginner class followed by Morgan Burdette and Steve Rem men . Chris Platero ro de his best race of the series to come from fou rth in the poi nts to first. Steve Jenkin s fo und h is w av in to se cond while Kervyn Cole fell fio m first to third . The In termed iat e class w as led the entire series by Donovan Mitchell, who nearly finished w ith a per fect score, but h ad a secon d -pl a ce fin ish in th e fir s t m o to, Craig Humphrey came away with secon d and th ird w en t to M ike Hodges. Hod ges also came away with the over all in the 500cc Interm ed iates. In the la r ge 125cc cl as s es, Lee McLaughlin lead the Beginners most of the series and held on for the cha mp ionship. Dennis James an d Aaron Ran dol ph followed . Stan Lundquist topped th e Novice clas s w h ile Justin Scull en a n d Jas on Elli s fin ishe d seco n d and third, res pective ly . Calvin Andlovec -..!.o ssed away his chance at the overall when he bailed ha rd in practice and was unable to co m p ete. The In term edi a te class carne down to the wire as it looked like Craig Humphrey was going to walk away with top honors, bu t in the fina l mota, Hu m phrey got a te rr ible sta rt, an d to com pou n d h is problems w ent down ear ly in the m ot a . Th is le ft the door open for Haw k White, who rode a strong p ace to win the champions hip. Humphrey took second an d Cliff Cook took third . Spor tsm an-class racing brought some extra sus pe nse to the even t as many of th e cham pi on sh ips w eren't d e cid ed C until the fina l mot o. In the SOcc ranks, racing was han d lebar-to-h an dl ebar wi th no one rider really d ominating an y of the classes. Chris top her Lored o ban ged wi th the best of them to take the championship in the Beginner class, followed by Darin Peili n and Charlie Morrison . Jesse Olso n and Micha el Patter son were separated by a mere point in the Novice class, with Olson getting the nod in the end. Jon Repl ogle was thi rd . The weekend event drew a large field of racers . Despit e frigid tem pe ratu res, the action heated up as A-C lass riders like Chuck Shirley of Aiken Suzu ki / Kawasa ki and KTM rider Richard Heirs ma de the ir laps at the im proved 195. Saturday's race w as for sin g le p oints, but Sunday ser ved not on ly as a benefit for District 29 bu t as a chance to earn double po ints as well. The Minis (4-6) were out for the points, just like their taller coun terparts. Satu rday, Taylor Bales took both mo tos for the win and Sunday, Luk e Grills held th e throttle op en to capture both of his moto s. In the Mini (7-8) class , Jake Grills .was not affected by the weath er, sweep ing his field . Grills took a ll four motos d espi te a good sho w from Stephen Cook and Timothy Dobbs.
