·._ ;t & Round 10: Don ThavaFactory Works H ·AMA . HARE SCRAMBLE ·' .~. , S .: Mid.soou. WinterHa~ Sc~mb~ Series ff (Left) Greg Blackwell came from behind to win the second-to-Iast round of the MldSouth Winter Hare Scrambles Series In Tennessee. (Below) Mike Morriswas the runner-up. ac we scores D CENTERVILLE, TN, MAR. 17 OUg Blackwell power ed hi s Sport Cycl e Racing Yam aha to victory at the Don Th ava Factory Works Hare Scr am bles to collect the lion's share of the purse on what was a perfec t day for racing . The event was the second-tolas t round of th e Mid -South Hare Scrambles Series. Mike Sampson shot his Team Green Bloom ingt on Power Sports Kawasaki int o the early lead , but Sarges Suzuki's Robert Patterson had other thoughts as he took over the lead abo ut a mile into the race an d continue d ou t front , hoping to repeat his ro un d-nine performance. H alfway throu gh lap one, Pat ter son ' s rear brakes qu it and he had to pull off and try to ma ke rep airs. Unfortunately, he was done for the day. Mike Morris, aboard his Du kes Performance Yamaha, too k over the po int position and carried it to th e scoring chute at th e end of lap one. Sam pson hun g on in seco nd as Bla ckw ell fo llowed in third . Patterson came in fou rth and stopped in the pits for some quick repairs, and fo rmer N at ional End u ro Ch ampion Terry Cunningham held dow n fifth on his Kawasaki KDX200. Mo rris, Samp so n and Black w ell · pulled out a sligh t lead on lap two over the othe r AA rid ers, an d they continued in th is orde r by the end of the lap w ith Cunningham m oving in to fou rth and Mike Cornett, on h is KTM, hold in g down fifth. The lead trio of Morris, Sampson and Blackw ell cont inu ed until h alfw ay through the th ird lap, wh en Sampson had a life-threat en in g experie nce. H e exp lained, "1 was dr opping off of one of th e steep downhills wh en I go t ou t of shape and a tree speared me in the side and punctured my left side. After that, it actu ally scared me enoug h that I slowed considerably in the woods sections." Blackwell moved up to chall en ge Morris for th e lead, th en th ey traded places a couple of times until Morris en tered the scoring chute w ith a narrow _ advan tage at the end of the lap . Sampson continued in third, as John Maschino, on his Cycle Shed KTM, moved into the fourth sp ot, relegating Cunningh am, who was having a good ride until a miscue slowed his charge and Cornett also moved past him . The fourth lap was per haps the most exciting because race leaders Morris and Blackwell both said that they lost track of how many times they traded the lead. Blackwell finally emerged the lead er as they descend ed the steep downhill into the open field a nd in to th e scorers' chu te. Head in g out on the fifth a nd final lap, Blackwell enjoyed about a I S-secon d lead over Morris, with Sa m pson hol di ng d ow n th ird, as Cornett and Maschino carried on their own race for fourt h and fifth, respectively. The fi na l lap was p retty m u ch u neventfu l as Blackwell stre tche d his lead to abou t 4S ticks at the finish. After crossing the finish line, he said, "It was a good race, Morris and I had some close encou nters for a couple of lap s before I finally pu lled away. Noth ing d irty, just goo d, cl ean racing . Th e course w as great, they did a good job." Morris sai d , "Yeah, we had so me good, clea n racing. It was great! Th e cou rse had a little bit of everything. That really mad e it exciting ." Sampson held on for a third and said, "I'm just glad to ha ve been able to finish after that close encou nter w ith the tree spearing me. I wo ul d like to thank th e Leich Brothers Racing for lending me a tan k before th e race . Mine got a p unc- tur e after falling ove r in the trailer while driving to this race." Cornett and Maschino came in just as close as they did wh en they started the lap. They batt led to the wire with Cornett coming ou t on top of that scrap. Former N ati onal H are Scramble Champion Tony Hendon laid down the law in the Ve t A class. He scored yet ano ther win aboard his Suzuki of Paris RMX, as Robert Kirchner, also Suzukimounted , could do nothing about it but settle for second. Kaw as aki KDX200- mo u n te d Barry Brazier held off the adva nces o f hi s yo unger competitors to ca pture the 200cc A-cla ss wi n over Mike Garrett , also on a Kawasaki. KTM Sport Motorcycles Jared Smith and Steve Gordon, on h is Mid -State Moto Sports Kawasaki, went a t it all . race long in the 2S0cc A class. Gordo n said, "I was closing in on him and going to try and m a ke a pass on the uphill jump when a slower ride r moved over to let me go past, but he moved righ t int o my line, and I cou ld n' t believe it w hen I saw it was my da d! He said he really felt bad, bu t it wa s jus t one of those things. I'm just glad I didn't hurt him, I might' ve had to walk home." With just one round re mai ning in th is se ries, Ch ris Beard, on h is Sarges Cycle Hond a, and Robert Leich, on his Kawasaki, are in a tie for the Open Bclass championship . Chris and Robert finis hed this race one and two , respectively. Kevin Greekm u r wrapped up th e 12Scc B-c1 ass cha m pion shi p with ye t anothe r w in on his Yamaha. Kaw asak i rider Scott Turner stay ed close in second . Greg Gillion, on hi s SCR Yam aha, put in another fine r id e to clinc h the ~ 2S0cc B cla ss. Series riva l, Tim Po ol finished second on hill Kawasaki. Cod y Maxvell took advantage of an u nfortuna te incid ent to race leader Harvey Whitiker on the last lap to take the Four-Stroke-c1ass win. Whitaker said, " It was just one of those things, a guy was cross-rutted on one of the steep hills and I couldn't get around him and went down. I then got passed ." In Super Senior action, Gu y Anderson took top honors on his Kawasaki , as Jim Gordon rebounded from his last-lap collision with his son to take second. Clint Robinson, on his KDX200, took first place in the 200cc B competition, as Ronald Skipper and Dave La mberth gave chase for second and third, respec tively. Todd Boon e put his Honda XR out front in the Open A class and he ld on to take top honors over second-place fin- isher Jaso n Jennings, w ho w as a lso Honda mounted. Ricky Whi te ly wrapp ed up th e Heavy Trail-class championship with a win on his Kawasaki. Performance Kawasaki rid er Randy Hicks did likewise in the Lite Trail class.
