(Left) Justin Bucke lew (58) and Jo hnny Marley (90) battled toot h and nail for the 80cc (12-13)M odified runoff win, with Buckelew taking the hard-fought victory. (Right) Brian McGavran (8) blasted to overall wins in both 80cc (12-13) Stoc k and Super Mini (7-16) divisions. Schn ell, Andy Bowyer and Shaun Perolio, Bauder be gan to pressure Skaggs at the halfway point while Johnson closed th e d ist an ce bet w een himself an d th e tw o lead ers. Johnson reduced the 10-bike-len gth . ad van tage to zero during the final few laps and was clearly faster than Bauder. Kawasaki-mounted Johnson watched for a mis take a n d found his chance when Bauder s p u n hi s re ar tire and began to slide in a slick tum. Johnson capitalized by p assing Bauder, th en quick ly caught Skaggs wh o looked to be getting tired . Johnson pressured Skaggs and even tu ally made the pass to score the moto and overall win. Bauder finis he d th ird. "My te amm ate s were r iding rea l fast," sai d overall wi nn er Johnson. "For a while I couldn' t h ardl y ga in an inch, but in th e e n d it ca me d own to enduran ce. I don' t know if they got tired or what." Johnson also returned for a d ouble moto sweep of th e 250cc Pro di vision, where he topped Lytle, Travis Preston , Skaggs and Shane Esposito. After gating poorly, Johnson came through the field in the first race to pass Team Honda of Tro y rider Lytle in the final turn to score the win. "Th at was one of the most crazy rid es I eve r had," said the excited Johnson. "Peop le were go ing all over. They were falling down th en ge t ting back up and I was up to fourth. I wasn't sure I was going to pull it off. In the end, I had one little charice in the last tum to take the win. Casey didn't let off and I didn't let off and I guess who ever made it through there was go ing to win. And I pulled it off." Lytle led m ost of the second rnoto, too, but once again Johnson reeled him in and m ade the pass. Johnson's move came with th ree lap s left in the race. This time , though, he pu lled out a comfortable lead. "I have been working with Casey since he was a mini rider," sa id former su percross champ Donnie Hanson. "He's a strong rider and rea l fluid but he get's a little exci ted at limes, so don't leave the d oor open because he 's aggressive and he will take advantage of that." Tea m Ho nda rid er Bryan McCavran was the top BOcc rider after he posted overall wins in both the BOcc Stock (1213) and the Super Mini (7-16) divisions. Oklahoma's Johnny Marley took top honors in the first moto. "Robbie Reynard' s dad built thi s engine for us, " John Marley Sr. said. "It' s real fast." (Right) Jake Griffis nabbed the Super Pee Wee (7-9)win. McCavran posted a second- place finish d uring qu ali fyin g but re turned for an undisputed win in the second moto. "I wish Bill O rr, Hon d a's amateur race coordinator, could ha ve been her e to see thi s," McGavran said. "My dad told me to use m y head today and I did, I am really happy to win ." Arguably the most intense mini race of the day carne in the BOcc (12-13) Modified runoff. ew Mexico's [ustin Buckelew and Johnny Mar ley went at it tooth and nail for the e n tire r ac e . Marl e y pulled the holesh ot while Buckelew funnelled in beh ind in second. Marlev p icked up the pace, but BuckeIe~ matched him tum for tum and ju m p for jump. It wasn't long before it was a tworider battle for the championship as third-place rid er Ivan Tedesco simply could not maintain the pace. Suzuki' s Brandon [esseman firiished fourth. Bu ckelew dug deep and let it hang out down a deeply rutted straightaway, sw itching from the main line to an ou tside lin e to make hi s pass. "I made a nice, clean pass," said Buckelew . "I took my lime, found an opening and used it to my advantage." In th e en d , Buckelew prevailed for th e champ io nship over a tea ry-eyed Ma rley. "The last couple races I haven' t been getting good starts," said Marley. "Bu t I pulled the holeshot in this one and I was trying to win. There' s always next time . I'll keep trying." Tedesco finish ed a solid third in the race while Jessem an a n d McGavran rounded out th e top five in what wa s arguably the best race of the weekend. n Lake Whitney Cycle Ranch Lake Whitney, Texas Results: March 17, 1996 TEENY M IN I: 1.
