all of them go at it a little bit. 1 d id n't want to ge t mixed up in that. 1 stepped back and basically rode my own race . 1 was ab le to pull ' em back in when 1 needed to . Troy (Corser) w as the only one ou t there th at 1 thought.. . w ell, 1 could pull him in, but I thought he could be tough to catch. Then he pulled out, so... " 1 had what it took to get it done (a draft pass), but eve ryt hi ng had to be just right. He blipped it a lit tle bit coming ou t of the chicane, but it was cool because 1 had a few bik e len gths to pla y with so I didn't h ave to slo w d own at a ll . We go t ou t, and weavi ng on the banking at 180 mph isn't fun. That last cut we mad e coming off four, both of us wer e slid ing the rear tire. My tire had a lot of laps on it because 1 was ou t for some time - 1 had to blip it just that little bit too much and that's all it took. He won this race. He dese rve s it." Unlike Russell , Edwards was able to m ake th e dra ft p a s s wo rk, pulling around Picotte as th e two crossed th e finish line. . " 1 got kinda scre wed wi th abo u t six, seven lap s to go," Ed wards said . "With three laps to go, two laps to go, 1 said, 'Thi s isn 't happening . I'm no t finishing fou rth agai n. 1 finished fou rth last year. I'm either goin g to throw it dow n th e roa d or get on the box tod ay. 1 rode as ha rd as 1 cou ld those last few la ps an d it paid off." Behind them came a lonely Ch andler, the Californian staying out of tro uble for the en tire race to earn fifth pla ce. "Yeah , it w a s pretty uneventful, " Chandler exp lained later. " 1 raced a bi t with (Steve) Crevier and that was good. He started spi nni ng a lot when the tires went off. I' m happy . We started out doing 55s (1:55 lap times) an d ended up in the 52s. We just nee d to ge t more lime on the bike to ge t more comfortable." Then came Crevier, another w ho stayed clear of calamity, in sixth p lace : "1 h ad so me good races wi th the guys and it was pretty uneventful, " the Can ad ian said . "1 had it in me to do better lap times, but 1 just didn' t believe enough in myself. I ha d lots of power and it w as spinning everywhe re. 1 just did my confidence in with the crash on Wednesday (d uring p ractice )." Seventh p lace went to Yates, p roving himself as a serious conte nder in only his first superbike race as a factory rider. Kipp was ano ther who steered clear of trouble, endi ng th e day eig hth on the Vance & Hines Yamaha. "Fo r what we had, I thought it was a good race," Kipp said. "We' re just down on top speed - big time. 1 went with a soft rear and a med ium front and that was a mistake on m y part. It worked for me during the week and 1 thou ght we cou ld ge t along with it. The chassis is really good righ t now - we just nee d to fin d so me p o w e r , ju s t a little more speed." Behi nd Kipp came Pegr am - the lone factory Du cati still running at the finis h - an d H arl ey-D a v ids on ' s C a rr in a n impressive 10th place. . "O ur goal when we came here was to fini sh th e ra ce," Carr s ai d . "Ha rleyDavidson h asn 't finished a Dayton a 200 in abou t 20 years. We came close la st y ear, but came up a few laps short. 1 thought if we stayed co ns is te n t. an d burned some la ps, an d stayed ou t o f trouble we had a sho t at a top-10 - and su re eno ugh we ended up lOth . It was a real smooth race w it h n o maj or problem s. We didn't make any mistakes and never ran off the track or anything like tha t. We jus t mainly tried to stay out of troubl e . We didn't try to take m any chan ces wi th the lappers. Overall, we're (Right) Scott Russell leads the field during the caution period that was run beh ind a pace car.
