By Dave P. Meadows
LUCERNE VAllEY, CA,. FEB. 25
Jeff Capt was the man of the hour, persevering
through ha rsh wea ther to finish the Cheders

The b anne r d ropped fo r the unsuspecting
one-loop riders at 9 a.m. and they headed ou t
onto the 44-mile circuiL On the other side of the
road, the two- loops wer e prepari ng for their
start which was to be at 9:.30.
At abou t 9:15 the tem perature plummeted and the valley was engulfed in a cloud , cutting visibility to less than 100 yards . The twoloop start was pos tpo ned from 9:.30 to 10 a.m.,
a n d at 9:30 a .m. Lucerne Valley was fully
engulfed in a snowstorm. Man y racers returned
to the pits to try to weatheiproof themselves ,
donning ski masks, heavy gloves, riding jackets,

garbage bags. At 10:00 a.m, the banner dropped
for the racers who would attempt two loops on
the snow-covered course. Leading the parade at
the bomb was Vet -ela ss racer Abe Bau mann,
followed by Paul Krau se, Eric Hallgath, Stev e
H engeveld, a n d Billy Fullmer on h is fo u rstroke. FIrst Amateur ride r was Tom Finch . The
Novice start was led by Charlie Powell Ill, who
seemed unaffected by the falling snow as h e
sped by the bomb.
The Checkers decided to hal t the race after
just one loop as the temperature co n tin ued to
drop. "This turned out to be a w ise decision, as
all the racers were having troyble negotiating
the course under such severe Conditions. Major
problems resulted from cold hands and p oor
visibility.
In the end it came down to who could reach
