Gaddis, Mo rgan and Palmer led the
third wave. Gaddis soon dished out a
IO-bike-length lead ahead of the d ueling
Morgan and Palmer. Palm er made
repeated drives up into Morgan, but
Morgan held his ground for second with
Palmer thi rd .
Buehl left no d o u b t in any one ' s
mind who was going to control the
fin al e vent as h e jumped out to an
early lead with Morgan in tow. Jones
went from midpack to second before
th e big double with Goodman fighting
for the same po sition. Morgan got back
around them for secon d, but Jones had
th e better line over the rocke rs. Morgan, h owev er , made a repass for th e
second slot. Again, Gaddis fought off a
m id pa ck s tar t to cat ch th e lead er s
Buehl, Morgan and Jones. While Gaddis se t his Sigh t on Jon es, Goodman
m ad e a st ro ng d rive on Gaddis over
the double and in to the hairpin leading
to the triples . Gaddis stumbled and fell
ove r . The spectators jumped out o f
their seats, sensing a champi onship
about to be lost. Gaddis couldn't fire
hi s bike off, and the crowd scr eamed.
Four kicks later, he was off in eighth .
Gaddi s was riding like a man possessed, as he started to reel off riders
one by one . Woolsey ~as Gaddis' first
victim, th en Morgan waved Gaddis by .
