, H-D 883 hotshoe Jason Fletcher ran second, several lengths behind Murphree after the top three riders spread out Fletcher tried everything he could to inch his Spectrol Moroney 's machine closer to Murphree, but the young Californian was simply out of reach. "He's fast - who is that guy?" Fletcher joked. HOur bike was set up wrong . We should have made it longer. And the track was really different from the way it was in the heat, but you couldn't tell until you got out there. Still, it's cool that we got second." Third-place finisher Eric Bostr om found Fletcher equally out of reach. The Bartels' dirt tracker I road racer had looked im p ressive in his heat race but was unable to ma tch that performance in the main event. He would end u p circulating the track about a half straightaway behind Fletcher for the entire race . HI kind of forgot how to ride the 883s on dirt," the personable Bostrom said. HIt took me a while to get it figured out. The bike could have been set up a little better, but the Bartels' Harley-Davidson was still awesome. We'll get 'em next time." Morehead and King reversed both start and finish positions in the main event; Morehead lined up on the rubber just to the left of King, who occupied the outside pole. When the green flag flew, Morehead squirted into the lead, while Roeder and King appeared to bump while fighting for the second spot, which went to Roeder. King continued to look for a way around, while Varnes shook off Fletcher and took up the chase for a podium position. Roeder then fell off the groove on the third lap and started swapping while desperately trying to recover. The big Ohioan got it together, but not before King and Varnes squirted underneath to claim second and thi rd, respectively. Des pit e having do deal with a red-hot brake rotor, Roeder was able to han g on for fifth behind Georgie Price IV. There was just no stopping Mo rehead, however, who was p redictably methodical in his effort to put ground between himself and the pack. Mo rehead took the checkered flag by a wide margin to claim his first win of the year and the lion's share of his own purse. HI just went as fast as I had to," Morehead said. HAnd hey, we get to keep our own money. That makes it even nicer.
