, sultant f or Kawasaki, what advice will you give your riders? To win! (Laughs) Well, I'm going to work with them the w hole wee k between Gai nesville and Da ytona, and we're going to go to the same tracks that I tested on every year that I won. There's a certain technique that you need to win Da ytona, and I th ink I can teach it to them. Before I won, I guess you could say that I learned it from Oeff) Stanton. The bike setup is also a lot d ifferen t at Daytona , and I know a little about tha t, too. Wh ich of your riders has the best chance? I think they all have a good shot at the win . Jeff Emig"has the most experience on the track, he's rac ed there quite a few times. Ryan Hughes is stro ng, and that will allow him to hold on the whole time. Damon Huffman has a lot of talent, and I think I can show him a few things. I'd say they all have a great chance. 9 6 I. o BM BUELL DUCAT I HA RLEY-DAVIDSO N HONDA KAWASAKI SUZUKI TRIUMPH Y AMAH A o ~ 1ft . " " -I o Jeff Stanton Four-time Daytona Sup ercross winner As the team consultant fo r Honda, w hat advice will you give your riders? Well, bike setup was always real important for me , so we're going to p ractice on some sand tracks before the race and get the bikes d ialed in . The y will also have to get adapted to the sand - you have to ride Daytona a little different • there - wa y back over the back of the bike. The race is a long one, but Jerem y and Steve are in good shape, so that's not a concern. S teve Lamson 's riding style cl osely resembles yours . Consi dering your success at Daytona, w ould you say that Lamson's chances at Daytona are good? We already know that McGrath's are••. Yeah, defini tely. Steve lacks a little natural talent, but he makes up for that with a lot of hard work. He could d o it - he has the ability and the speed. All Steve needs is to get the same confidence on his 250 that he has on a 125. On his 125, he's got confidence like no other. Steve is steady and strong. But Jeremy - his main goal th is yea r is to win Dayt ona. He 's a lread y got th e Superc ross Ch a mpionships and fin a lly got a Nationa l Champions hip, but he still has to win Daytona. You know as well as I do tha t w hen he sets out to do so mething, he usually gets it done. Gary Bailey Tra ck designer The Daytona Supercross course is traditionally th e roughest of the year. Why not make it more of a traditio nal supercross? Well, because of the shape of the area we have to work with and because the stands are all on one side of the track, we basically had two options - make the track have a lot of turns, or stretch it out and make it mo re high speed. Making a lot of turns would result in a one-lined track because of the sand, so we opted to make it longer an d m o re nar row, Also, Da y tona is known for speed, and to throw in more obstacles and make it more like a traditional supercross would slow the action down too much. Which of the t op riders has the most favorable riding sty lefo r the course? How can you go with anybody but Jeremy McGrath? In my opinion, he would have won last year if it weren ' t for tha t first-tum crash. And this year he' s even stronger. Other than Jeremy, I'd say that Ryan Hughes has a pretty good shot The track is rough and real physical, and he's a strong rider. 9 o 00 w The Powep to Move You SEE THE LATEST 1996 MODELS AND A CCES S O RI ES FO R M OTO RCYCLES, ATVS AND P ERSONAL WATE RC RAFT I Exciting action featuresl Vintage and classic b ik e s l The 5th a n nual Cycl e World Readers' Collectionl Visit the Duke Video Th eatre presented by Cycle W orld' WIN a ne_ 1 996 Suzuk i DR200SE Dualsport™ moto rcycleI WIN the Arlen Nes s c u s tomized Bud Bike 111I W IN a 1996 Yamaha Ban s hee-ATVI ..... -...- ........ __ ..-.-. _ _ ~ and much, much more' ...- -.I _ ........ ____ .............. _ . . .
