CYCLE NEWS 1996 APPALACHIAN 'DUAL SPORT TOUR Jeremy McGrath Team Honda/l-8OO-CollectlFox The Daytona Supercross is one event win that has eluded you... Yeah, that's the only race that I don't have a ch eck in the win col umn at. I think I pretty much ha ve everything else covered. Winning Da ytona is my goal this year. I think I could have won last year, but I got taken out in the first tum. In the past, I used to go to Daytona planning to get on the pod ium and get as many points as I could before going back to the real tracks. Last year, I went there to win, and this year I'm going there to win. What will it take fo r you to finally win this event? Well, first 111 need to get a good start and get through the first tum clean. As long as I start near the front I should be okay. Last year we ca me up with some real good suspension settings, so we have a good starting point thi s year. We 'll be ready. Dam on Huffman Team Kawasaki As a Western Regional 125cc-elass rider, you've only had part-time showings at the Daytona Supercross in the past. Still, you have had a few resp ectable rides there.: Yea h, I did okay there the first time I raced a 250 there, bu t until this year I've never gone to Daytona confident in my bike. I really feel like I can win this year, but in the past I maybe went there just to see how good I could do. The track is notoriously rougher than other supercrosses, and you 've been exceptionally strong in the whoops all year long. Could this be your event? Well, the Kawasakis are working really good in the whoops. I think we have the best-handling bikes on the track and that will be an advantage at Daytona. After the first few races, I feel like I have found out where I should be running in supercross. Before the season started r didn't know w here I s tood against the ot her guys, bu t now I figure that I shoul d be on the podium every time. I think maybe I'm overdue for a win, and Daytona would be a cool race to win for my first time. Ryan Hughes Team Kawasaki How have you fared at Daytona in the past, and what are your goals f or th is year'sraa? I first raced there in '94 and I finished sixth. Last yea r, I broke my shift lever and DNFed. This year I hope to get on the podium. My ultimate goal, of course, would be to win, but top three would be good. After finishing third at San Diego, I'd like to stay on the podium from here " onout Does your rid ing style suit the rough Daytona circuit? Yeah, I th in k so . My bike is working super good in the rough, and Daytona is ro ugh - re a l ro ugh. There's whoops before all the jumps an d holes wh en you land. You can't compare Daytona to any other race - it's just Daytona. I'm looking forward to the race, I reall y like it TOUR 1 HURRICANE MILLS, TN We'll kick off this year's Tour at the home of the Queen of Country Music - Loretta Lynn's Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee.
