In fact it' s road racing that Crevier's been doing most of the winter, testing m ore than h e ewe r h as - easily done since he was never invited to the Muzzy tests - and getting acclimated to the new team, which goes abo u t ra cing much differently that the Muzzy squad. "Rob expects th at yo u should be in sha pe and be ready to go when you step off the plane. I wo uldn't be at Honda if I didn't have Rob Mu zzy to get me here. I think in one sense I can respect and admire his thinking on that, but I think I nee ded mor e hel p than that," he say s, later adding tha t since "all the bikes are super com petitive, su per trick, you m ust test. That's the law . You can't not test. In one sense I admi re Rob 's way of thinking that you sho uld just be rea dy to go. But, I'm sorry, I can't agree to it because I need the extra special hel p. I'm n ot that confi den t anymore." Wh en Crevier had ea rlier u sed the wo rd "anymore" it was to say: "I' m no t 20 years old anymore. I' m not you ng, dumb and full of ener gy. I'm not how I was when I was 20. I'm 30, I'm just a workhorse rid er, I'm not an y miracle. So m y results in su perbike, I d on 't think, hav e been go od enough. " On the Honda, Crev ie r predicts that " we should see a lot better results fro m me right away." He a ttrib utes the new found confi- dence to the team. They go out of their way to m ake him com fortable, wh ich would appear relati vely easy. The western Canadian is a bundle of barely contained energy at the track, always smiling, always joking, never taking himself too seriou sly. " I 'm getting the sea t tim e and that has a lot to do wit h Gary Mathers agreeing that a rider ha s to test . Martin Adams agrees th at a rid er has to be on the bike m ore. And I think the experience that they got with M iguel last year - in the beginning they had no testing and then they tested h im a lot and .' th en they w er e unloading the bik es at the ra ce track and they- were ready to go. , "Right now I've done enough testing already that I feel reall y confident of the bike an d I know the character istics of the bike. I've alrea dy ridden them pretty h a r d , pretty fas t, and I feel co mfortable." Th e te a m has tes ted a t Daytona, Homestead, Will ow Springs, and tw ice a t Lagu na Seca. Though Crevier has be en a bout a second off DuHa mel' s pace, he's confident the times will come, especially since it took several ses sions for him to sort out the carburetion, on e o f his pet peeves . "It seems that m y common complaint about life in general is that life d oesn't se em to carburete properly." Then they put DuHamel on the bike, he confirmed Crevier 's su sp icions, an d th e problem w as sorted ou t. Since h e a n d DuHame l are rou g h ly th e same size, the bike also fits h im be tter th an IF YOU LOVE THE EXCITEMENT OF SIT11NG IN TH SKIND OF SEAT..· • the longis h Kawasaki that was design ed aro un d the mu ch taller Russell. "I like the H onda because yo u ca n steer it in to a tu m reall y well. Becau se there's not so much backspin off the rear wheel, it doesn ' t set th e b ack en d up sidew ays too much. You can enter corners at a good click, confidently, choose your li ne on the way in . Like Laguna h as corners lik e turn five, wh ich a re bu mpy, uphill left-b anders, and I know before that when I tried to accelerate too hard and carry my momentum, I w as always go ing to get into a high-side situa t io n . The fle x an d stability in the Honda jus t seems to soak those bumps up confid entl y a n d comfortab ly an d you' re not using u p so much energy. It's an eas ier b ike for me to ride. It has a g ood, long, flat powerband and it doesn't wheelie u p t oo m u ch to the o ther corners. You sort of mi ss th e amusing b la st of power yo u go t off Muzzy's ZX7. It hi ts like a cement truck. I always liked that. I'm always am used b y a b last of power, es pecially with Rob's bike. Th e thi ngs were powerful. They were fast. Hard for me to control." . With the package complete for 1995, and a two- year deal in hand, Crevier is read y to race, but not to make any pr edicti ons, at least not for this year. " I really want, and I really think I ha ve, the opportunity to shine, m aybe not this year, but I have two years with Honda and I believe that I can shi ne . And I hope that I ha ve four years with Honda then," he says. "I'm not going to sit her e an d say that I'm goin g to wi n championships. I want to win races this year and if th at m eans pushing hard e n o u gh to get o u t front and m a ybe cras h ing on the way, then if that' s what it' s going to take to win some races, then I'm going to do that. The championship will come after I wi n races. Of course, you can not win rac es and still w in champ ionsh ip s with the silly AMA p oint structure, 35 points a ra ce," he says before lau n chi ng into a harangue about the AMA point system . "Wh at I want to do is start learning how to win races aga in. It ' s someth in g that I'm missing. And if I d on 't win some damn races soo n, I'm going to be shelved . You can't be a fa ctory ra cer and not w in races . "I feel that I can win races, I know it's in my heart, I kn ow I've got the ability to do it and I'm not going to let anythin g stop me. I'm jus t going to wo rk at it as h ard as I can. And if I don ' t wi n the firs t o ne , and I don' t wi n the secon d one, I hope to hell that I win by the end of the year. I'm jus t going to keep chipping away at the old block. Life is no t any different. You've just got to wo rk at it. With the program I' ve got, when I'm working at it , as long a s I show the enthusiasm th at I'm working at it, I'm alw ays going to ha ve the help I need to get there . "1' ve always wanted to be with this program and deep down I always wanted to ride with Martin and work under Ray Plumb, and definitely to have Merlvn Plumlee as a mechanic is kind o f a bon us . That' s the icing on the cake ." l~ YOU'LL LOVE THE EXCITEMENT OF SIT11NG IN THESE!
