I PRODUCT EVALUATION I "Cool skids" riginally, I got the Gaerne Touring boot because I wanted to attract less attention to myself. Before th ese the only motorcycle-specific footwear I had was a pair of red and white road racing boots - cool when you're wearing m atching full leathers and going road racing. not' so cool when you're d ressed in jeans and a plaid flannel or any othe r "normal" clothes, rid ing to wo rk. For the sake o f protectio n, I wore the colorful ones anyway, an d pe0ple kept staring at my feet, whi spering to each othe r while taking furtive glances back at me. O thers jus t w alked away shaking their heads. O Wearing the Gaemes people still stare at my feet, but now they come up to me and say, "Cool s kids, where'd ya get 'em?" Gaerne Touring boots are hand made in Italy, from top-grain leather - and they are m ade for rid ing motorcycles. What sets them apart from "normal" shoes or boots? First, they are cut With a forward cant, so the boot resists bunching around the ankle for ease of using the foot controls. Second, the top of the both toes are reinforced, not just the shifting foot, so both feet have the same appearance (also good if you ride right-hand-shift vintage bikes). Lastly, a full-length, YKK zipper no laces to wa nder into spinning parts ha ndles boot closure. The zi pper is in tum covered by a leathe r flap, secured with a hook-an d-l oop fast ener, w h ich protects the bike from scratching. The construction quality and material used are both top qu ality. On the outside, all critical seams are d ouble stitched and the hiking-boo t-style soles are oil resis tant. Inside, the boot is fully lined with soft glove leather. The footbed is also leather. Sizing seems to run large, these being a half size sma ller than I normally wea r and still a bit too roo my . Length wasn' t a problem, but for a p roper fit in other areas I had to use a foam rep lacement insole to take up the extra space. After a short break-in period, the boots have proven comfortable. Pu rists might opt for black, but our feeling is that the natural oiled finish is more attractive. In daily use for the past severa l mon ths, they've held up well and the oiled finish has darkened with wear. Gaerne Touring boots list for $189.95, and are availa ble in sizes 7-13.
