Dirt T r a ck Racers Associati o n (VDTRA) will return to racing in Florida with two th ird-mile events sched u led for March 5-6 during Camel Motorcycle Week. Following a press conference on Feb ru ary 12 to announced the venture, Bu ell was sched u led to hold a th ree -d ay d ealer meeting in Tokyo. Thi rty dealers have been set up with sales exp ected to be around 150 units in 1996, the first o f which will be available on March 1. The company will offer th e Sl Lightning and the S2T Thund erbolt touring model to the market. Buells are currently sold in th e Uni te d States, Canada and Chile. The SOOO-seat faci lity, which is loca ted jus t sout heas t of Rivers ide, is schedu led to open its door s with a spri n t-car show on March 30. It is the first new dirt track to be constructed in Sout hern Californi a in 25 years, and it will be the first Sout hern California h alf mile to ru n weekly shows since th e d emi se of Ascot Park in 1991. Along those lines, Kazarian said th a t th e permanent structu res at th e site will include mod ern restroo m facilities and high-quality food concession s. It will also be h ard-wired in key areas to facilitate television coverage. Several improveme nts will be made to the site each year . The track itself has been designed to accommodate both half mile and qu art er mile racin g. The back straigh taway will be elevated to make for a full vie w of the racing action even when the infield is full of race transporters. And the infield itse lf has been designed to allow for a full-o n IT course, giving Perris Auto Speedway the ability to host half mile, short track and TT events. Kazarian says that part of the plan is to run no less than four AMA Regional di rt track races in 1996. "We still have to talk with the AMA to negotiate the d ates," Kazarian said . "But we've put a lot of time an d e ffort into it, and we 've also been talk ing to people abou t hosting AMA-sa nctioned am ateur dirt track events on a more frequent basis." Approximately 200 people attended the groundbreaking ceremony, and en thusiasm was running high - perha ps none was more moved than longti me Southern California racing an nouncer Bruce Flan ders, wh o will be annou ncing several even ts at the track. "God, what a glorio us da y," Flanders sai d . "A brand-new dirt tra ck in Sou thern California . You know, there's something viscera l abo u t dirt track racing. The first two guys ever to race did it on the dirt. And now we have the first new Southern California d irt track in 25 years... Can you tell I'm excited? This place is gonna be aweso me!"
