their headlights running and the latest in motocross technology. "Rocket" Rex Staten was out front all the way when the banner d ropped and turned one cons istent lap after another as the seni ors gradually divi ded themselves into racers and riders. Paul Flanders, who entered as a Senior Beginner, was quickly relegated to "rider." "1 got a good start - these desert guys don't know how to ride on pavement like us dual sporters - but it went downhill as soon as 1 got to the dirt," said Flanders. "They all passed me back." The race was marred by the death of Cork Krickbaum, a Senior who crashed over the triple jump. Th e crowd was still bundled up in jackets and hats when the Vet Experts and Amateurs left the line just before 11 a.rn., and solid gray skies promised a lig ht sprinkling of rain before the day was over. Staten was out in fro nt again in th e first loop of the Over 30 dash but succumbed to the hard-charging Krause just before the end of loop two. "The course dropped off a 10-foot cliff at the road crossing. 1landed pretty hard, and the pipe bro ke," said Staten. Krause never looked back, an d Staten was even tua lly forced to settle for secon d, ahead of Honda CR500 racer Drey Dircks, KTM-mounted Scot Harden and KX500 racer Ted Hunnicutt. "The course is okay," sai d Krause. "The.triple jump is small and I can d o it, so tha t m ake s me fee l g oo d, b ut the desert section is gettin g re ally, really rough. It's already pretty close to a' disaster at th is poin t. The ground is so wet there's no give in it." The Vet Novices and Beginners raced next, and then it was time for Ty Davis ' first .appea rance in the race th a t combined 12Sec mounts with the women and mini racers . "1 tho ught LarryRoeseler was going to do th is r ace," said Davis, glancing around on the start. "It looks like it's just me and the girls." Suzuki pilot John Braasch and KXl25-mounted Steve Hengeveld did what they could, but it was Davis all the way for the first three laps. The Kawasaki racer pulled a 45-second lead on his first trip around the eight-mite circuit and had put mo re than a minute on second-placed John Braasch by the end of loop three. No body wa s expecting the checkered flag to drop for Dana Van Stee. "Davis was gone, so I hung w it h Braasch and Steve Hengeveld. I passed Hengeveld when he pitted; then 1 saw Davis sitting by the side of the road," said KXI25-mounted Van Stee. A quick trip through the pit had left Davis a little short on gas, and he coasted to a ha lt jus t shy of the final mo tocross section. Braasch's chance to take over the lead was stymied by a different sort of gas problem. "The gas cap fell off and 1 lost a lot of gas . 1 stopped halfway th r ou gh the mo tocross track. Some guy carne over and gave m e ga s," said Braasch, w ho dashed home " the nick of time to hold in on to second . But th e biggest surprise of the race was still to come, when a cow riding a KX25O, w ith chickens on its front fender and tw o p igs and a sheep on its rear fender, crossed the finish line. "I'm surprised all that stuff is still on there," said Vicki Keen, who was vying for the $100 purse the Vi pers M.e. offered for the best rider costume.
