What do you th in k of the modem riding techn iques? These new techniques require a foundation of skills that come from bicycle tri- als just to eve n think of competing at the World level. It's a whole new sty le of practice. A g uy co u ld s ta rt at home p racticing on a bi cycle and grow his w ay into th e sport and b e successfu l in t he indoors eve n if he can't ride as well in the ou tdoor events. The new style has even influenced the development of the bikes. Now the motorcvcles are created around the 'bicycle trials sty le. From yo ur pers pective, h as t rial s b ecome m o re enj oyabl e to watch? On the World Championship level it has become a tremen dous specta tor sport. It' s so hard . It's unbelievab le! It's like watching Formula 1. There are 10 or 15 guys th at are really worth watchi ng . I love to see the progress in the sport. I think I enjoy it so much beca use I u nderstand it. On th e other hand it' s not even the sa me spo rt I used to ride. D uring the '70 s a n d '8 0s the Un it e d Sta te s p roduc ed a World Ch am p io n and many top rid ers who were able to s co re World Championsh ip points . What do you th ink the reasons were? With all Am ericans w ho com pete in an int ern ation al sport, be it tria ls or moun tain bikes, th e challenge is to actually pick up your bags and go to where the competition is and Jive there and work at it every da y w ith the best.
