How long ha ve you lived in Eur o pe? Are you fully Europeanized, or is there still some American left in you? ox. I th in k ha lf and half. I came over wh en I was 18 an d I' m 38 now, so I've been here longer than there. I think that there is still a lot of American left in me. I think that there alw ays will be. I wo rk w ith Americans all the time and I enjoy it. Over here it's just a d iffer ent way, peo p le here work to live an d live to eat, and in the State s you eat to live and live to mak e money. It's just a different philosophy, in many pa rts of America, anywa y. Being American has bee n a grea t founda tio n, I th ink America is a great cou n try , I still love it. Americans a re gre a t, they ' re creative and crazy and the y ge t the job done. They just do it. Just shut up an d go do it . (Laughs) I think th a t is my nic he over here; I' m kind of the "can do" player in the Euro pea n moun tain bike market for som e of the Ll.S, companies.'I've learn ed to deal wit h the Europeans after so many years of competing with them, wo rking with them and being in their coun try. My p a rents were over for a visit a nd we wen t wit h m y b r o th e r-in -l a w (1981 World Champion ) Giles Bur gat. I spoke wi th Ma rt in Lampkin and Ma lcol m Rath mel an d Cha rlie Cou tar d . It was grea t to see those guys. We ha d a good time . The sectio ns we re crazy! Lots o f spec tators . I really enjoyed seeing all the people a nd wa tchi ng th e riders. That was the last trial I've been to. Before that it had been, I d on 't know, abo ut eig ht ye a rs. It ' s ch a nged a lot. Gil es an d I were b oth very su rprised . He hadn't seen a trial in years either . Do you have any de sire to compete again? I still ru n and mo unta in bike and tr y to stay in good shape, but I don't have much d es ire to compete anym ore. I think maybe I wa s in it too much. It's like I w en t wa y too far - so far th at there is no return. I d on ' t even th ink I co u ld comp et e against Rya n Yo ung tod a y. The tech niques have al ready go ne so far th at I' m n o t even sure I cou ld go out and ride an eve nt at the Na tional level. What impressed you the most at the French World Round ? I was imp res sed by the w ho le even t. I look at it now through a marketing pe rspective now, and I thin k it's incred ible. It's like watching a GP or a supercross. The ride rs ar e do ing incredi b le th ings and the bikes are incredible, espec ially wh at's been done with their su spension a n d w eig h t. It ' s ver y te ch nical. The bikes ha ve become alm ost like mo un tain bikes in s ize . Th e b ikes insp ire me to give it a try, you know, just go and have fun on one . What do you think about Jord; Tarres winni ng seven World Champ ion sh ip s? I think its just incredible.'To be honest with you, I can't believe it. Just incred ible.
