HE is GPs so I feel comfortable he re, an d 1 love jumping." Krause, who was forced to dr op out of Sunday 's races due to illness, held on to take third, ahead of Roeseler, Ondas, Smith and Dircks . "It was typical Adelanto," said Roeseier. "You're never really in control on this course -you're just on that fine line, trying to go as hard as you can. The bike is really twitchy all the time, so it's tiring, too." Sunday's racing began with blue skies and sunshine, and an imp ressive.lineu p of vintage and classic bikes for the Vintage/Classic/Side hack r'!ce. Th e racing was wide- ha ndlebar-ta- wide- handlebar as the Pen tons, Greeves and Rickm ans thundere d d ow n the p avement then slowed ab ruptly as old Fox and Kem u t shocks we n t to work in the d irt. Jaso n Tr ub e y to p ped the fie ld o n a 1976 RM250, and Pe te and Sco tt Whitney topp ed the Side hack division, although the spectator favo rites were Ron Whittaker and John Williams, who made quite a splash when they en doed thei r Was p into the mud at the foot of the water jump. Drop ping the banner wasn't enough to get the Pee Wee division started. It took waving and yelling and pushing to get the tiny tots under wa y, but the merry-go-round look of the crowded just-for-kids course, plus the sound of race supporters yelling seldom-heard instructions like "slow down" and "don' t cry," was more than worth the effort At the end of the race, the Pee Wees got together with the racers in the Kids Divisio n, who had competed on the motocross track, and headed for the Kawasaki pit, where all 187 of them received a gra b-bag gift with a finisher plaque and a Kawasaki souvenir. Davis was on the line again in the Four-Stroke d ivision , which share d a sta rting line wi th the Dual Sport c lass, and led for two spectacular .laps on his KLX650. "I rode it too hard and I blew it up," said Davis, who pulled out a 49-second lead on his first lap and was triple-jum ping the four-stroke like a stadi um racer. "I sho u ld've bac ked her d own. 1 had Campbell beat easily but 1had my adrenaline going and 1wanted to go, go, go." The engine failure tu rned th e wi n over to Campbell. Jeff Capt made it onetwo for Honda and ex-rnotocrosser Jeff Spencer topped the Dual Sport division on a K1M LC4. The license plate and taillight tha t Spencer lost in the motocross section were delivered to him at the finish. "The jumps are pretty scary on this heavy of a bike, but it's still the funnest bike I've ever had," said Spencer. . Davis was back with a vengeance for th e 250cc Pros, taking a wire-to-wire win by more than two minutes over Destry Abbott, Steve Hengeveld and Eric Hallgath, and turned in another high-flying performance to win the final race of the weekend, the Open Class, . ahead of Campbell and Staten, wh o battled for three laps before Campbell got the edge. Smith and Ondas filled out the top five. " I li ke ra cing th e 250 s best here because you don't get tired," said Davis. "On a 250, you just keep it pinned and the jumps are fu n because you can do th ings you can't do on a 500 because you're too busy hanging on." .
