CA, JAN. 7 ick Ryan em erged as the top professional racer in the 20th annual Golden State Nationals opener at a fo g -s h r o ud ed ' Riv e rf ro nt Park. Ryan competed in 125, 250, an d 500cc pro con tests, and although he won onl y a single moto for the da y, his consistent fini shes (n ever o u t of th e top five in six motos) garnered him the 250cc Pro overall, as well as third 500 and fourth ov era ll in the 125cc rac e. Ryan's co nsi s t e n cy w as in marked con trast to the majority of competitors, as the la rge turnou t of p ros made for an u npredictab le, cra sh-filled contest, a n d mi xed result s wer e the n orm . Jockeyin g for position behind Holland were Tyler H ummel, j.R . Mason, Rodney Smi th , Jak e Windham and Rick Ryan. In a sign of t hi ngs to co me, Honda-m ounted R Mason was the fir st to pa rt with h is machine, crashing ha rd in the sa ndy back section. "I was running th ird , bu t we (top 10 rider s ) were w a y close, " sai d Mason. "One of the bi kes sla mme d me and, boom! I was oii-the tr ack and in the trees." Mason's C R wa s w edg ed in t h e thick branches of a trackside will ow, wh ile Ma son w as bri efl y kn ock ed un conscious wh en h e la nded some d istance away. Altho ugh his bike was extracted inta ct ' a n d u nda mage d , Mason wi sel y e lected to spectate the rest of the d ay. A sho rt distan ce back, a second gro u p of riders, led by jake Wind h am, batt led it ou t. One p ar ticularly difficult s tretc h w a s whe r e fas te r ri de rs needed to land in di fficult rut-cro ssed Out front, Holland 's lead began to sh rin k as Vohlan d and Ryan closed the gap while th ey di ced for se con d . Ho lland had a good cushion, and held on to take the win, followed by Voh land, Ryan , Smith and Esposito . Ne xt across we re Wa lters, Gomm , Windham, Hummel an d Ma tson, completing the top 10. Vo h la n d nail ed the holeshot in a big w ay for moto two, although some riders la te r claimed Vohl and, among others, jumped th e g ate . Vohl and led th e first lap, followed by Matson, Ryan, Ju stin 'Tiern ey an d Sm ith . Tiearney was typical of m an y talented ride rs wh o had mi xed res u lts, as he cou ld d o no better tha n 20th in the first moto . Vohla nd led the next two (relatively ) uneven tfu l laps, followed by Matson, Ryan , Tiearney and Smith.
