Voss had no trouble outdist ancing all the 250cc competitors during both outings and even had time for an unplanned get-<>ff over one of the many su pe rcross ob stacles which lin e the race course. "I wa s able to escape from the blizzard back h om e,· Voss said. "Wh en I left, it was like 17 below zero." Voss, who will be training for the upcoming superaoss season in Arizona at the home of former factory mechanic Tom Morgan, says that he plans on racing locally in California and racing select supercross rounds while on vacation. Though Voss was the fastest of the 250cc racers, he was not even close to matching the speed of Australian supercross champ Kim Ashkenazi, who relocated to the city of Perris only 10 da ys before todays race. Ashkenazi annihilated the ra nks with two h an d s-d ow n, ru nawa y rides, topping Voss, Andrew Bell, Parks a nd Daron At kins in thc overall standings. Re s ult s p~~ W"' T ra(k STRTR (4-6 ): 1. The TVRC races on the motorcycles of yesteryear, placing 1975 or old er bikes in the Vintage class and 1981 or older bikes (witho u t di sc brakes or liquid cooling) in the GP class . Each class is divided u p into sections for all ages and skill levels. Ju s t beca u se y o u ' re racin g on a vintage motorcycle doesn' t mean you have to be old , too . Fou rtee n-year-old Billy Don Coxsey current ly holds first place in the TVRe GP Amateur poi nts race, so it was no surprise that he took the overall win in the class at Spring Valley. Billy s dad. David Coxsey , took the opening· mot o hol eshot, bu t by th e. time they reached john..,n's comer (so nam ed after fonner Super cross champ Rick johnson), the younger Coxsey had found his wav around his d ad . As the race progressed, Billy Coxsey built up a full IS-second lead over second-placed David Coxsey and jerry Nelson, who ran third for most of the moto before being displaced. by Tom Castan ola. That 's how they finished in moto one. Moto hvo was nearly an instant replay. This time Billy took the early lead and then checked ou t to lock up the overall victory . David Coxsey wa s second ove ra ll, Castan o la th ird , Ne lso n fou rth. and jeff Gibbons was fifth. The Vin tage Intermediat es put on a good sh o w with john Doskoci l a nd Ran d y Brown swa p ping the lead sev eral tim es in mot a on e. Doskocil took the ho leshot followed by Brown. David Allard and Donnie Oli ver. Brown took the lead over the first set of doubles bu t gave it right back in johnson's comer . Poo r enjoyed a good lead un til his bike died in tu m one , m id w ay th rou gh th e mot o . It wou ld n't restart and he was forced to push it to the p its. Kawata notched 2-1 finishes to take the overa ll win in the BOcc Novi ce clas.s on his . first visit to the loca l racing action at Spring val leyMX. Kawata's victory di d not come easily as he had to contend with Billy Don Coxsey , wh o took the first-mo ta holes hot and almost go t comp leteIy awa y before Ka wata cou ld settle in to a good pace. Beh ind him were Tiffer Wri ght, Darren Fow ler and Brand on Woods in that orde r. Kawata was still not comfortable by the time he reached the doubles and had to sing le each one whil e Coxsey and Wrigh t sailed over them with ease . Kawata managed to han g on to second while Wright dropped his Kaw asaki in tum five and fell to last. Coxsey bobbled a couple of times. allowing Kawata to catch up. The last trip over the dou bles told the story as Kawata took the lead on the last double only to have Coxsey outrun him in the fina l few feet to take mot o one . Ka wata finished secon d and Wood s third . Mot o two had all the excitem ent of a pro fessional race. Wright took the holeshot and looked as if he had the race under control while Coxsey ra n se co n d a n d Kaw ata thi rd . Bu t Kawa ta imm ed iately beg an his ascent to the top , pressuring Co xsey th ro u gh ou t la p one a nd then passing him to take secon d. Then before the end of lap one, Kawata took the lead from Wright with Coxsey following him around the openinglap leade r. While Coxsey and Wright fought for second, Kawata extended his lead by abou t 15 seconds. Coxsey mad e up a lot of ground, however, and by the time Kawata reached johnson's Corner on the white-flag lap, Cox.. ;ey had pull ed to o within striking distance. The hvo dra g raC\.--d one last time through the doubles and then ran neck and neck around the last tum toward the checkered flag. wi th Kawala pulli ng off the win over Coxsey by less than a bike length. Krause dominates Dirt Diggers Hare Scrambles By Matt Freeman RED MOUNTAIN, CA, DEC.10 For the second year in a row, KX500 rid er Paul Krause took the overall win at the Dirt Diggers Winter Hare Hare Scrambles in the Red Moun tain OHV area . Nearly 350 rid ers showed up on a cool, clear, and dustv da y to race the ninth annua l Winter Har e, which is th e las t race o f the yea r in th e AMA District 37 racing series. The 37-mile season finale was laid ou t over miles and miles of virgin bushwhacking terrain with an occasional rocky uphill thrown in to make thin gs interesting. At the start, Krau se and his Kawasaki teammate Dave Ondas led the Expert wave on the mile-long uphill bomb ru n. H owever, as the route nar rowed down to one trail, O ndas and his Team Green KX500 pu lled ahe ad of Krause and thir d-placed CR500 rider Derrick PaIemen t. Ondas continued to lead the h igh -speed first half of the course u ntil he overshot a tum, opening the door for Krause to pass. " I pa ssed Da ve about 10 m iles ou t," said Krause. "He blew a tum comin g out of a sa nd wash and I was able to make it and take over." As Krause and On das ba ttled for the lead, the rest of the field follow<>d the blindi ng dust. One ride r who ha d to deal with more dust than an ticipa ted was new ly crown ed number-o ne Open Vet Abe Baum ann . . " I did n't get a vcry goo d sta rt:' Ba umann said. "I tried ou t some new goggles an d they just filled up wi th dust. making it hard to see. I had to sto p three times and c1~a r the du st from my eyes and gogg les." With Bau mann fighting d u st, Rob Poznoff led the Vet Open Expert class not far behind first 250cc Expert Charlie Morris. Krau se finished the first trip around the 37mile loop in jus t 50 minutes. As he left the pits with fresh goggles and a full tank of gas he had built up 'a min ute' s lead o ve r seco nd -p laced Ondas. About a minute behind Ondas, Paiement was running a strong third. A minute behi nd PaIement into the pits was 250cc leader Morris, followed by Open Vet leader Poznoff. O pen class pilot Paul Schaffer, Vet 250cc leader john Rudder, and second 250cc-class ride r jon Parks . All of the first eigh t rid ers left the pi ts with a one-minute gap sepa rating one from another as they ventu red ou t on the second and final dusty lap of the course. Dust on the second lap proved to be thicker because of lapped riders, but not too thi ck for Kra use.
