CONGRATULATIONS TO TEAM PIRELLI first clean on the Coke section. Those early fives were to cost Lampkin dearly, as not even a confident clean on the spectacular "Cascade" waterfall, constructed of glass-fiber sections, could save Lampkin from a score of 17 which was boosted to 20 as Pons had him on both races. The next duo was anticipated as being the best clash of the night: Tarres and Colley of Gas Gas. Tarres is quite simply the best trial rider the world has ever seen and is treated with huge respect. But something happens to Colley when he enters an indoor. His face flushes pink, he tarts to sweat and his eyes go glazed as the adrenalin pumps furiously. He sees nothing but the hazards - and somehow they suddenly look ridiculously easy to him - and he gets frustrated even if he lose a single dab. Frustrated he may be, but the confidence remains sky high and disappointment is almost sure to be followed by a brilliant clean. Tarres made just a single mistake in his qualifier, fiving the first section, and not even four following cleans could save him from being beaten by the Brit. He lost an extra two marks for exc.eeding the seven-minute time limit time limit by over two minutes and surprisingly knocked the top high-jump bar off to drop another mark as the others easiIYcleaned. The final pairing to emerge ~ere Ahvala and super-coo·1 Colomer, and again the prospect was intriguing. Ahvala doesn't always give the impression of giving 100 percent i!! indoors, but he sure did in Girona - maybe it was the new bike, but his clean over those opening cheese-shaped blocks was the only one of the nigltt. Colomer failed here, but a he then cleaned the Coke bottles and Ahvala failed, they simply 1 canceled each other out. Colomer then surprisingly cast a couple of points away over the cigar.ette packets - which had seen five previous cleans - and Ahvala looked like he had him until the Fantic rider slipped off the easiest section of the night, which was a seri.es of 12-inch concrete pipes sponsored by "Joltn Smith" - but not the famous Bri tish brewery. A quick check showed that Colley was in top form and that the t!tree qualifiers would be Colley, Colomer and Tarres with the scores being 11, 12 and 14, leaving the pioneering Kuroyama exclaiming, "Oh no! Just one mark, only one mark out, one mark from the final. Ohno!" The three-man final was about as good as it gets, with each rider's confidence at a high as they approached the hazards for the second time. Amazingly, Tarres again failed on the opening section as his rivals settled for safe dabs. Tarres and Colomer then brilliantly cleaned the Coke bottles, wltile Colley retaliated with the sole clean on the "FaneJas Fortuna" before getting too excited on the John Smith pipes and spinning the rear wheel off the side for a five that effectively cost him the win. Colomer stayed oh-so-cool as Colley kept the pressure on, beating Colomer in the first race. But Colomer Itad the l edge in the fi.nal race, jumping ecstatica 11 y up the finishing ramp to claim his c second win of the year. £:\ Scott Summers: FIRST OVERALL 1995 NATIONAL HARE SCRAMBLES SERIES.
