Laughlin HS had worked his way up to 14th in the physical standings. As the final 21-miJe section began, the grueling course and treacherous terrain meant it was still anybody's race, and the casualties started to mount. Krause's brilliant comeback effort bit the dust when he was hit by stomach problems halfway round the final loop. "1 got really cold and chilled, and then I got sick. I made it until about 12 miles from the finish and I couldn't hold it any longer," said Krause. "I don't know whether it's the flu or just riding. It's ha rd to go as hard as you can for a lap and a half in this stuff. It's a tough race and it takes a lot out of you." Krause's illness turned out to be a blessing for Campbell, whose XR400 ran out of gas a little further around the loop. . "I pushed it a little too far. I thought I could make it," said Campbell. "Paul Krause gave me some gas and that's what got me in to the finish." - Even bigger problems hit Book, who was still running third overall when his bike reportedly quit when it hit a g-out and refused to restart. Book, who suffered his first setback of the day before the ra.ce when his van refused to start in the hotel parking lot, suffered a DNF. With just 10 miles to go, it was Davis' tum to run into problems. "A rock smashed the chain guard and it took the chain right off," said Davis. "I was full of adrenalin trying to bend it back, hurrying because I knew everyone was coming up behind me. I got it back together and then I had to milk it in to the finish." Even racing in "dairy mode," Davis was plenty fast and he was still three minutes up on Zitterkopf when he crested the final hill and wheelied his KX500 across the finish line. "Wow', that was tough. What a ride," said Davis. "This race was plenty long enough. Seventy miles doesn't sound like a lot, but it'll wear you out when it's this tight." Davis admitted that he'd had a lot of doubts about taking the overall win before the race began. "Zitterkopf and Healey were my main competition going into this. I figured they would be the ones to beat, but I just concentrated on setting my own pace," Davis sa.id. "1 just decided to ride my own race and, if I caught them that'd be okay, and if I didn't, that'd be okay too. The 250 helped. It's definitely not a 500cc course." Like Davis, Zitterkopf spent the last part of his race riding carefully to make sure he made it all the way to the checkered flag. "Everything was going well until I crashed - my bike was working perfectly, but after that I just tried to make sure I got second so I could win my class," said Zitterkopf who recently dropped KTM in favor of a new deal with Kawasaki. "I'm not in good enough shape to race really hard yet, and this bike is quite a bit different from the four-stroke I've been riding. I've only done a couple of local races on it so far." Zitterkopf earned a $275 purse for taking the Open Pro win. Despite running out of gas and losing time to a flat lire, Jim Gray's KTM 360 captured third overall and second in the Open Pro division, nine minutes behind Zitterkopf. "1 rode as hard as I could to catch back up," said Gray. "The course was awesome - the best desert race I've ever ridden. It was lots of fun and you could get a good rhythm going." KTM 250 racer Destry Abbott crossed the finish line in fifth but edged Scot . IN T ERN AT ION A 6 9 9 I .j L lVIo"torcy:cle o o ~ 1ft .
