The Grand Prix event is the ideal (
champion maker, for it combines seg- .
ments of the TT, supercross and
motocross circuits with a wild ride in the
woods. Not only are a rider's skills tested, but with 3D-minute heats, endurance
counts as well. Riders were blessed with
a cool, cloudy day for the final event. By
the end of the day three Costa Rican riders would earn championships: Alex
Viquez, Eduado Rojas and Fonseca.
Kodak team manager Carlos Aries provides bikes, transportation, lodging and
expenses for his five-rider team.
The 125cc A race finally gave Shaun
• Perolio his first win. Perolio said, "Charlie Bogard and 1 were slow starting and
came through the pack together. I
picked up the lead and felt good, when I
overran a turn, went over th.e bars and
my face guard kissed the tree. I
remounted and thought Bogard would
catch me, but 1 held the lead." Johnson
was knocked out of the 125cc points
when a rear axle came loose.
But Johnson secured his Championship in the 250cc A race, coming back
from fifth at the end of lap one to lead the
final lap ahead of Sellards and Bogard.
Jake Griffis stormed back to third in
the 51cc (7-8) final behind Davi Milsaps
and Andrew Matusek. Griffis said, "1
wanted that KTM prize and picked
enough points to win the Stock overall."
Alex Viquez topped the Stock and
Modified point totals for the Olympiad
championship.
After sweeping every event, 85cc (711) Champion Rojas said, "My sponsor,
Jose Ferraro, brought me here from
Costa Rica as his only rider and 1 was
glad that 1 could win."
Weyand Bentley ended their weeklong 125cc (12-15) battle, joined by Fonseca and Pastrana. Wey led all the way,
with Bentley on his fender and never far
behind.
"Wey was riding hard, but 1 was on a
stock bike and 1 wore myself out trying
to pass him," Bentley said.
