Inaugural BROS Vintage Hare Scrambles a success By Scott Ohlemeler PINE MILLS, 1\ NOV. 12 Despite a modest turnout, the BROS VintageOnly Hare Scrambles, held on the 80 scenic aeres of piny woods at Mike Smith's Quitman Go-Kart Speedway, provided entrants some satisfy~.n.g thrills, and spectators a bit of unexpected eXCIte- ment. Temperatures in the low 70s, sunshine and a light Friday-night rain combined to ereate near perfect race conditions. The tractIon was out- standing in the soft, spongy East Texas loam and helped propel riders through the tight tums of the 75-minute-plus-one-lap event. the entry of former Guinness world record holder and superbike ace Ollis Lance, who set the mark for fastest motorcycle wheel.ie in the mid'80s. Lance diced with Solinger for 11 of 12 laps before his tank ran dry on the final loop at the checkpoint/pit area. The delay allowed Solinger to win by a full three minutes. Although racing in separate classes, the two evenly-matched riders staged a 9D-minute battle. Solinger led from the start despite feeling constant pressure from Lance, who arrive::I at ~early every checkpoint on Solinger's rear tire. Fmally on lap eight, Lance found a place to pass and took the lead for one lap before he overshot a sharp tum and careened into the thick timber. "I got tangled up in a bunch of trees and had to work my bike out of there with no handlebar room," said Lance, who spent .the next two and a half laps about 20-30 seconds behind Solinger's blazing MX36O. "(Solinger) knows what he's doing out there, and how to hold a lead in this kind of race," Lance said. "Brake skidding. dragging feet in du t, blocking out on turns.. .! knew it'd be hard to get around him. I'm used to much more passing roolIl- " Results PRE-MORN '" 1. 0ttU l . - . Fay, Moran top Elrna 01 By Clay Ught El.MA, WA, NOV. 25 The AMA District 27 and Northwest Championship Series came to an end at the Elma Pavilion Arena, where 258 riders were on hand for one of the best races of the season. Topping Professional action were Mickey Fay, winner of the Expert final, and Bob Moran, who won the PrcrAm main event. In the Expert main event, Fay jumped out &ont and was never headed, while a battle for second raged between Dan Stanley and Jeff Harsha. The two spent the second half of the race fighting for the spot, which went to Harsha after the national number-76 plate holder shoved Stanley out of the way. Further back in the pack was Jeff Hiatt, followed by Jeff Annen and Chris Fitzhugh, both of whom had to start in the penalty area after jumpIng the start. Hiatt controlled the battle for fourth, while Annen barely edged Fitzhugh for fifth at the finishIn the Pro-Am final, Moran jumped to the head of the field and, much like Fay, ran away with the race. This left Randy Patterson to chase down Moran in a battle for first place in the series, in which Moran had to win and Patterson had to finish third or better. Patterson's secondplace ride netted him the Northwest Championship Series win, while third went to Mark Patterson, ahead of Steve Pmczinski and Willie Halbert. AMA ational 80cc Champion Jake Holden ran away with the 80cc A main, much like he has done all season. Holden edged out archrival Chris Waite for the win. However, Waite will wear the number-one plate for the District next season in the class. The surprise, though, was third-place finisher Brad Smith, who edged seasoned 80cc riders Matt McCoy aod Scott Houseman at the finish. Results EX: 1. Mickey Fay (Rtx); 2. Jeff Harsha (Rtx); 3. Ryan wins, loses at Oatfield MX By Dick Archer TURLOCK, CA, NOV. 19 Rick Ryan did all he possibly could to win th two Pro-class series titles during the fifth and final round of the AMP Racing/Oawson Motorsports Octoberfest '95 MX series at tJ:e O~tfi~ld, but he fell just short of his goal despite wuuung all four motos in the 250 and 12.5cc Pro classes. Ryan holeshot moto one of the 250cc Pro class with athan Woods and Jim Oay chasing him in vain. Woods stayed close for a while but Ryan was going strong and motored on for the win. Woods held on for a solid second, and series points leader Oay secured a dearly needed third-place finish. In moto two, things looked quite a bit different as they rounded the crest of turn one. Dustin Bloom£eld Jed the pack as they blistered onto the track with Woods in second, Clay in third, and Ryan stuck back in fourth. Bloomfield set the pace as the four streaked around for many laps just a few bike lengths apart. With two laps to go, Ryan started to make his move closing in on and passing Clay. All four nders were still very close when Bloom£eld smelled victory and started to pull away with the lead. Ryan saw he was running out of time and quickly overtook Woods for second. On the la tlap, Ryan moved in for the kill on Bloomfield, passing him on a downhill straight. Ryan railed the last few corners and took the win. Bloomfield hung on to second and Clay managed to pass Woods for third which ga.ve him enough points to win the 250cc Pro senes title. Ryan would repeat his 250cc performance in the 125cc Pro class as well, but Jason Jenkins amassed enough points to claim the series title. Several other battles for se.ries wins came down to the wire. In the 250cc intermediate ranks, Donovan Mitchell and Craig Humphrey had traded the points lead on a weekly basis sin.ce this series began. Humphrey won the overall toda)' with a 2-1 effort, but Mitchell's second-place finish (1-2) was good enough to edge out Humphrey for the series win. The SOcc division title chases were all decided by only a few points and came down to the last motos. In the SOcc Beginner class, J.J. Alcantar, Matthew George and Dustin Enoch clashed in both motos. Enoch went 1-1 for the day, but Alcantar and George finished second and third to secure first and second for the series. Cory Rick Ryan swept the 125 and 250Cc Pro divisions during the final round of the AMP RaclngIClawson Motorsports Octoberfest MX series at the Oatfleld In Turlock, California. 80 lNT: 1.
