EVENTS best race of the weekend. Eleven riders roared into turn one with Bultaco 360-mounted 'Jim Ferguson taking the lead; Ferguson's freshJy broken collarbone didn't allow him to make his usual getaway, and he found himself involved in a three-to-five-rider war for the entire race. At the end of lap one, Ferguson held a slim lead over BSA rider Damon Lengle, Blake Wilson on a Honda and the Bultaco rider Dennis Borroughs. But the man on the move wits BSA pilot Eddie Tumlin. Dead last on the first lap, Tumlin was coming on strong and held fourth position by lap three. With six laps to go, Tumlin had to work fast. He slipped past Wilson for third on lap four and then blew past Ferguson and Lengle together to take the lead one lap later. Tumlin then held on for a well-deserved firstplace trophy. At the checkered flag, Crane held the' lead, Nicolaides made second and Farnsworth finished third. For the Second Division's second scratch heat, Chris Nicolaides pulled another h.oleshot. Wolbert came alive, leaving Halsey in his dust and overtaking Nicolaides for the lead. Wolbert took the checkered flag. Nicolaides got second, and Halsey third. First Division scratch heat two began with Robin Nicolaides taking the holeshot. Crane stuffed a wheel in, sending Nicolaides up the track into an out-of-eontrollow- ide. Hitting the wall hard, Nicolaides was out of the race. Crane easily gained another win and Farnsworth got second. The final Second Division heat had Halsey quickly overtaken by Nicolaides, who was then passed by Wotbert. Nicolaides never did regain the lead. With WolberYs win, the overaU firstplace position for Second Division was a tie between Chris Nicolaides and Terry Wolbert. Holiday Downs hosts Vintage Grand Finale By John Blackstock PALMEITO, GA, OCT. 2B-29 The AHRMA southeastern clirt bike.season came to a roaring finish at Holiday Downs as Beno Rodi and the Atlanta Motorcycle Club put on six different events over two days. Saturday's action got underway with the motocross, which was followed immediately by an observed trials. As the sun set, a few brave souls saddled up for a night enduro. Three exciting events followed on Sunday. First off was a one-hour cross country GP. Then came some fast racing on the short track and fjnally the IT scrambles. Action was hot right away with Maico ace Benny Dorrough putting together six fine motos, which resulted in overall wins'in the Sportsman 250cc, Sportsman 500cc and Over 30 Expert races. Also making some noise was AHRMA newcomer Michael Barkerashe guided his beastly Husky to first overall in the Over 30 Intermediate division as well as second in' the Sportsman 500 Intennediate class. Ray Brooks showed everyone a few tricks during the observed trials by carding only five points to win the Classic Expert division on a Hodaka. Dan Brown also had a fine ride on his Suzuki dropping six for first in the Advanced class. One of the more interesting machjnes was the 1965 Hodaka 90 engine mounted in a BeneUi frame. It wasn't just for show as Charlie Roberts rode it to a first in the Classic Masters cUvision. Evidently three class wins weren't enough For Benny Dorrough and his Maico. The Georgia speedster returned Sunday and took firat overall ahead of Chuck Peavy on a Husky and the Penton of Howard Bennett, who also took a first in the Over 40 class. The short track riders were greeted by a smoother-than-usuaJ surface, which led to a fine afternoon of racing. The day's Hrst race was a . dogfight between Rodi riding a Royal Enfield and Triw:nph rider Blake Ross. Rodi took a nice lead off the start but was soon reeled in by the charger Ross. Rodi wicked it up just enough to take the win over Ross and James Hiter. The Modern 600cc class proved to be the SPTSMN 250 INT: 1. Blake Wilson (Hon); 2. jllmes Hiter (Yam). . Schewe shakes up Dutch Sport Motocross By Larry Witmer BLOOMINGDALE, MI, NaY. 5 Eric Schewe held off all challenges by his rivals in the 250cc C class to claim a well-dese.rved win as Dutch Sport Park closed its racing season with great racing under beautihtl weather conditions. Racing got underway with the highly competitive 2S0cc C class coming off the gate. Jeff Cupp grabbing the holeshot over Eric Schewe, Bob Thomas, Joe Sullivan, and Dean Duncan. Cupp continued to hold the point, while Sullivan made the stadium rockers work for him, passing Thomas for third on the opening lap. The front-running pack stayed close for the next two laps in the same running order. SulJivan'made ..move going into a tight 1BOdegree corner to take the runner-up slot from Schewe. He took the line away from Schewe and had the pass made but couldn't keep the fire going in his Kawasaki, stalling his motor. Schewe retook the second spot. Quick action by Sullivan got the KX refired before Thomas could take advantage of Sullivan's miscue. Cupp went on to win the opening moto, with Schewe second. Sullivan held off Thomas' chaJlenges to card third. Cupp again showed his holeshot skills on the second-moto st¥rt. Schewe tan second,. while Duncan was third and Sullivan fourth. Schewe eventually had enough of Cupp's roost, and he made the challenge going through the stadium rockers by the woods line. He made the move stick and took over the lead. Then things turned ugly for Dean Duncan. The Suzuki-mounted rider came up short and sideways on a double jump, hitting the ground hard. The impact rang his bell hard and knocked the wind out of him, but he walked away from the crash. Meanwhile, Schewe pulled out to a lead pace that Cupp couldn't answer. Schewe came home the winner, and took the overall for the day, going 2-1 on his Honda. Cupp had to deal with Sullivan in the closing stages of the moto. Cupp tried to protect his line going through the sand rocker area, but Sullivan had the outside sweeper line dialed in, overtaking Cupp on the white-flag lap. Cupp still got the nod for second overall with his ]-3 motos over Sullivan's 3-2 moto finishes. Results 80 c: 1. Matt Mason (Yam); 2. Mike Bukowski (Yam); 3. Keegan Myers (Kaw); 4.
