holeshot at the start of the 16-lap main event
with Davis. Varnes, Pegram and Camlin in a
tight battle for position coming out of tum two.
Davis got under Morehead in tum one on the
second lap as he and Hacker pulled away from
the rest of the field. Unfortunately, Hacker started to fade with mechanical problems on lap five,
which allowed Davis to get by and pull away.
The race was then for second place as Morehead,
Varnes, Pegram and Camlin all passed the fading Hacker. Varnes then pulled off with
mechanical ills of his own on lap eight, while
Camlin passed Pegram to challenge Morehead
alone for second. Morehead used the same inlow, out-high line to hold Camlin at bay as
Davis took the checkered flag. Morehead followe', at a distance of some IS-bike lengths, and
a determined, but fru tr.ted Camlin finished
third. After the podium champagne shower,
Camlin exclaimed, "That old dog is hard to
pass!"

Bobby Decker won the 600cc Pro class during
the fir t round of the Florida Motorcycle Flat
Trackers Series at Orange County Raceway.
The 600 Semi-Pro clas aw Bobby Decker
power his Classic Window Tinting/Seminole
Power Sports-backed Honda to the checkers first
in the heat race. However, the final took a tittle
more work. After getting off the line in the middle of the pack for the final, Decker was in third
after one lap.
For the next three laps, Decker followed
Alan Weinberg with Kenny Parker leading.
After looking to the outside a number of times,
Decker found his line to be occupied. He took to
the inside entrance in turn one to overtake
Weinberg for second. With Parker leading,
Decker got a good drive off tum two and pulled
up next to Parker down the back straight to take
the lead by tum three. Decker was then able to
build a comfortable lead while Weinberg was
able to pass Parker for second.

Woods tough at GFTL ST
By John Blackstock
CARNESVlU.E, GA, NOV. 5
The final round of the GfTL short track series at
the Carnesville Karting Komplex had both
something new and something old. The old part
was the weather which, as at almost every other
round of the series this season, threatened to
force the racing to be stopped. Fortunately the
really foul weather eventually abated, and those
who hung on through the rain and sleet were
treated to something new as Virginia resident
Travis Wl)Ods and his son Aaron topped a few
classes in their first visit to the series.
The older Woods rode a neat-looking DTXstyle Husky to a convincing win in the 251-500
class, then returned to fight to a second-place
finish in the Semi Pro trophy class. Woods' son
Aaron made a real impression on the locals in
the 50cc 7-S-year-<>ld dass as he blasted around
the track to greet the checkered flag first. The
Woodses' performance was especially impressive by virtue of the fact that this was their
debut ride and most of the competition they
faced had been competing in the series all year.
ln other action, Chase Pickren took full
advantage of a couple of no--shows to walk away
with the 200cc-dass win. Bruce Dexter and joe
Sabin had a nice battle for second with Dexter
edging Sabin and Rick Matheny at the finish.
An added attraction for the season finale
was a Women's race. It was quite a show with
young Merritt Johnson riding her KXBO to victory, despite a displacement disadvantage, over
Melanie Keith, Phyllis Barnett and Amy Weaver,
all of whom were riding XR200 Hondas.
