onda of Troy's Mike Brown was
hot at Swan Motocross during the
first annual UFO Pro Challenge,
boasting a $17,500 Pro purse for both
125 and 250cc contenders.
Brown finished three of the four
races in excess of 10 seconds ahead of
second place, winning the 250cc event,
but was cut short in moto two of the
125cc class when his rear hub blew out.
The door was opened for young 16year-old Texan Charley Bogard when
Brown had to bow out just two laps
short of the finish, but overall 125cc Pro
honors went to Brock Sellards by way of
a 2-3 tally.
Thirty-one 250cc Pro racers and 23 of
their 125cc counterparts lined the gates
for the premier Sunday event.
The first Pro moto of the day was the
125cc event. Sellards was first off the
gate and into the first wooded downhill
section, but it was Brown who surfaced
in the lead and held his position all the
way to the finish, 18 seconds in front of
second-place contender Sellards. •
Positions were battled for behind the
two front runners as Roy Schellenberger
and Billy Whitley went at it. Schellenberger led the first lap before Whitley passed
him at the beginning of lap two for third
place before crashing. Whitley continued
to hunt his way back through the pack
and made a final pass on Bogard near the
end to claim fourth at the checkered £lag.
'The second moto had a strong showing off the start by Erick Vallejo with
Brown pn his rear fender, taking the lead
from young Vallejo over the first tunnel
jump and leading into the whoops. Bogard found a line around Vallejo and
went after Brown, the rookie pro staying
close to the seasoned pro for four laps
before Brown pulled away from the
pack. After Brown slowed down at the
end of lap nine with the blown hub, Bogard took over the lead and scored the
win. Whitley was second followed by
Sellards, Vallejo and Doug Stone.
A bigger gate lined up for the 250cc
Pro class, with Mike Brown once again
Jeading the charge to the first turn chased
by Kyle Lewis and Jeff Dement. Bogard
rode up on Dement and passed for third
in the woods, but Dement reeled Bogard
back for third place in the supercross section. Lewis refocused on Dement and
repassed for second two laps later holding on to the spot for the remainder of
the moto. Three-time world champion
Trarnpas Parker finished fourth followed
by Larry Brooks and Bogard.
Moto two of the 250cc Pro event was
led by Texan Dennis Hawthorne. Parker
and Lewis chased Hawthorne into the
first downhill, but Parker held the lead
spot back into sight. Brown moved up
behind Parker by the end of lap one
with Lewis, BrOOks, and Hawthorne in
the hunt.
The next lap became a sea of Hondas
and Yamahas in the top five slots while
Hawthorne was sixth. Parker stayed
with Brown fOT a single lap before
Brown kicked up the afterburners and
distanced himself from the rest, starting
with six seconds at the end of lap 3 and
up to 15 seconds by the end of the race.
Lewis ran second and Dement third.
Brooks stayed in fourth, while Tony
Amaradio filled the fifth spot.

AHRMAIBritish Bike Magazine Trials Series:
Final rounds
Plonkin' on home
By Matt Hilgenberg
HOLUSTER, CA, OCT. 21
he American Historic Racing
Motorcycle Association closed out
its British Bike Magazine-sponsored National Trials Series this weekend with the third West Coast doubleheader of the year, this time at Hollister
Hills OHV Park.
Starman Productions hosted 95
entries at the Saturday trial while Santa
Clara Riders Unlimited ran a bike show
and swap meet during the trial before
handling a Sunday.motocross.
Starman's Mike Fenner was the acting
trialmaster at this event, and offered up a
definite challenge. The ground was quite
dry and loose; finding traction was the
task of the day. Many sections required a
second-gear attack, something West
Coast riders don't normally see.
The loop was sufficiently long to help
with potential bottlenecks, and Fenner
opted to stagger the start by an hour to
help alleviate any problems. Line-three
and line-four (the two easier lines) riders began at noon, with line-one and
line-two riders going at 1 p.m. The trick
was that all riders had to finish by 3:30
p.m., and some didn't make the cut.
Denise Stanley rode her Yamaha to
the win in the Ladies Advanced class,
while the Modern Classic Beginners
. were also dominated by "wmen. Lea
Richardson, in her first-ever trial, piloted a Honda TLI25 to the win with just
two points to edge the four-point ride of
Tara Kusanovich.
Modem Classic Advanced saw Rory
Muscatell and Arizona's Ryan Dickson
tie for the win with four points each, but
Muscatell had two more cleans, thereby
earning the victory. Behind them, there

was a tie for third, with Clark Sumner
having two more cleans than Dennis
Thompson; each rider dropped nine
points.
Yamaha pilot Steve Kusanovich
proved once again that he should be in
the Master class, as he turned in one of
only three clean rides to win Modern
Classic Expert. Bill Grossi was second
with 10 points, followed by Joe Lorenzen and Steve Odell, with 14 each.
The other two riders with clean days
were Cody Webb in Junior Beginner,
where Kim Kusanovich and Max Malsbary finished 2-3, and "Really Old" Ed
Meagor in Premier Rigid Advanced,
where Lynn Boyer rode a Triumph twin
to second.

AMA Dist'ict 27 80cc champion Ku,t Hawk
swooped up a pair of wins at the Oakwood
Arena's indoor short track season opener to join
Open Pro winner Mickey Fay in the winner's
cirde.
The Suzuki-mounted Hawk faced incredibly
tough competition all night long. Even afte' taking nearly six months off from racing, Hawk has
come back stronger than ever. Hawk scored a
win in the first of two 80ee qualifiers but first
had to overtake Sean Light and Mike Rochester
to do so. AMA 80cc National Champion Jake
Holden won the second heat ahead of Kyle
Bunger.
Hawk sat on the pole fo' the 80cc A main
and led Holden, Bunger, Light and Jerry Hansen
into turn one. Hawk and Holden spent the
entire race in a wheel-to-wheel battle which
Hawk won. lo the 125cc A main, Hawk's second
win came after shaking olf Chase Gilbert. The
only real action' came in a battle for third
between Oregon ridel'S Light and Timmy Ricketts. Light held third the entire race until a'
lapped ride' ruined his fine showing across the
finish and the spot went Ricketts' way.
