aD Ask any mini-motocross racer and they'll tell There's two kinds of serious off-road riders. The first group consists of competitive cross-country racers, who love to see if they can get from here-to there-faster and quicker than anyone else. The second group is recreational riders who dedicate a weekend of off-roading in search of the ultimate trail. Both groups ride WR250s .• Based on YZ technology, the WR250 has been modified to specifically meet the needs of off-road riders. With one of the strongest engines in its class, the WR has a torquey, wide powerband that's exceptionally smooth and easy to control. It uses a wide ratio transmission, with low first and second gears for tight sections, and wide ratio fifth and sixth gears for open terrain .• Since it's designed to withstand long, marathon events, the WR250 has a large air cleaner box capacity and oversize air filter to allow the engine to breathe more efficiently. It uses a beefy clutch and plates for longer life under extreme use. And it's equipped with a lighting coil so you can power accessories like enduro running lights or a Baja-style headlight. • There's other serious touches too, like front and rear disc brakes and a wrap-around chain guide for more reliability in rough terrain and deep ruts .• The WR250. It offers just as much performance to the serious recreational rider as it does to the serious racer. HICKSVILLE Lon, Island Yamaha 6 N. The YZSO, already at the top of its class, getting more popular all the time. It's won more magazine shoot-outs than any other mini in the last three years. And more races too .• No big surprise: the YZSO is the most serious, successful and technologically advanced SO-class racer on the market. • It may be "only 79cc", but it's 79cc of liquid-cooled, six-speed, crankcase-inducted power. This mini-marvel has a ceramic composite cylinder to run cooler and a huge clutch that hangs in there when you're really blazing .• Plus the suspension is drop-dead serious. For three years the YZSO has laid claim to the coolest suspension in the mini wars: it currently boasts real-life inverted front forks with rebound and compression damping adjustments. The rear suspension is still ahead of the crowd with its rising-rate link-type shock that has preload, compression and rebound adjustability. That gives you almost 11 inches of quality, tunable suspension travel. Nothing mini about that. • The YZSO. It may be small in size, but it comes with a very big reputation for being a consistent leader in technology-and at the checkered flag. Professional rider depicted during closed-course event.
