30
ormer AJS factory pilot Doug Grant
finally had his shining moment
under the sun at the Hollister Hills
SVRA as the Santa Clara Riders Unlimited presented the final round of the
AHRMA/ Vintage Iron
National
Motocross Series.
"Of all the races I have done in the
past, this has to be ~ne of my best
moments," Grant said after winning race
three for the 40+ and 50+ Expert classes.
"I have had so much fun getting back
into the racing bit, but I have to get
home and see what my wife has in store
for me. She's about to produce our third
child."
Grant led from the first tum of the
GP track and held nothing back as he
easily defeated Dick "Bugsy" Mann,
who went on to win the 50+ division.
"I'm okay for a few laps," Mann said.
"But these kids are too good."
Also racing were two-time World
Motocross Champion and AHRMA
Executive Director Jeff Smith, Jody
Nicholas, Dusty Coppage, Russ Powell
and Buck Murphy. Smith sewed up
another National championship in the
50+ class despite the presence of rival
Hugh Weaver, who came all the way
from New York to try to dethrone him.
Smith put together a 3-5 score for the
title after Mann easily won the class.
"When we wrote the rules," Mann
said, "we didn't write a 60+ class
despite the fact that both Jeff and I are
61 years old.
Weaver finished second overall with
a 2-3 score, with Danny Davies being
the spoiler in the second moto after finishing second to Mann. Bill McClinton
also diced it up with the the two, finishing fourth in both motos.
Weaver's son, Tim Weaver, had a
good day, winning both motos in the
125cc Sportsman Expert division and
claiming a National title over Chris
Radzinski and Ty Erquiaga.
A long distance award could have
gone to Alan Woods, who traveled from
Oldham, Lancashire, England to win the
125 and 250cc Sportsman Intermediate
classes.
Dick Mann (5) pulled out the victory In the
50+ c.... during the final round of the
AHRMANlntage Iron NatIonal Motocross
5erles at the HoUIster Hills SVRA.
Vintage Iron sponsor Rick Doughty
topped the Premier 500cc Expert class
on his 1962 BSA Gold Star 500, taking
both moto wins over Mike Atkins, and
Pete Cruttenden, who beat out Pete
Ford in the last moto for third.
On hand for interviews were Brad
Lackey, who had intended to ride but
was held up by an ailing back, Jim
Odom, Bob Swanson, Donny Castro and
Jim Pomeroy.

BELOl G, MI, OCT. 7·8
For the last CCS race woekend of the season al
Grattan Raceway, Valley Racing's Brian Conley
showed the competition the reason he cilrries
the number-three plate after he saw three checkered nags first during the day.
m Sunday's combined Expert/ Amateur
Middleweight GP race, Conley got the holeshot.
His early lead didn't deter Castrol's Glen Paron.
Three times during the race, Paron challenged
Conley in the high-speed turn one. TZ-250
mounted Paron was carrying more come.r speed
by taking the wide line which enabled him to
get around Conley's 600. Each time, Conley
would then outbrake Paron going into tum two,
diving under him on the inside to regain the
lead. Conley barely beat Paron for the win. leaving Paron in second and a hard-charging Evans
Motorsports Britt Evans close behind in thircl
For the combined Expert/ Amateur Heavyweight Superbike race, Conley again made a
great start but was hounded by season rival Pro
Motorsport's Shawn Conrad. On the third lap, a
straightaway crash brought out the red flags.
CCS officials decided to re-grid the riders
according to their last completed lap positions
and resume the race at the halfway point. Conley, on the pole, got the holeshot again. Conrad
threatened, but didn't have enough time to catch
Conley, who was turning low 27s on his way to
his second win of the day.
Conley claimed his third victory in the
Expert Middleweight Superbike class. Again
turning the fastest times in the race, Conley had
two shadows this time - Learning Curves' Dave
Doe and Britt Evans. Neither could catch Conley
or match his times. Doe and Evans started dicing. and with three laps to go, Evans made his
move securing second behind Conley. while
Doe settled for the disappointing third. Team
Chicago's Steve Karson held a race-long fourth
place to the finish line.
