(Left) The top three celebrate. From left to right, Keith Pinkstaff, . Tripp Nobles and former Daytona 200 winner John Ashmead. bit us. Fortunately, for this race, it didn't hurt us too bad. In the past it did and maybe that's what cost us this championship. Hey, we're happy to be up front, anyway." Again it was a battle for second: Pinkstaff, Turpin, and Ashmead, with Graves coming up late in the game to join them. By then there were less than five laps to go and Graves, who'd dropped to a distant seventh after overshooting turn one, was now part of the action. Then he put himself into orbit, it was down to three, and soon two riders. Turpin's mechanicaL problems weren't over. As the trio made the run. off the banking on the penultimate lap, the engine in Turpin's Ducati expired, right in front of Pinkstaff. Turpin pulled down onto pit lane, Pinkstaff shut the throttle and moved to avoid him, and Ashmead was home free. "Turpin's bike quit right on the banking in NA5CAR turn four and, unfortunately, John (Ashmead) was in front of him andI was drafting behind him," Pinkstaff said. "And when his bike quit I had to get out of the gas and swerve to miss him and I lost John's draft. Then I was pretty sure that fourth would give me the championship. 50 the last two laps were very long laps that I ran conversatively. I think my lap times will bear that out." Pittman, who'd run near Pinkstaff un til the last four laps, was by himself in fourth; Munroe fifth with Real, Weber, an d Deatherage closing in. Munroe said that he'd hoped to stay with the leaders, but had hit a false neutral in turn one early one, running wide and losing about four seconds. fN Daytona International Speedway Daytona Beach, Florida Results: October 22, 1995 RACE ONE (Round 9 of 10), I.
