The two days of racing brought out over 650 riders and 3500 spectators to' the New Quail Canyon Motocross Facility. This was round four of the six-event District 37 Grands Prix series. The highlight of Saturday's racing was the team race. Twenty teams lined up for what was to be a close battle to the finish. The winner of the previous two California Grands Prix, jimmy Lewis, teamed with Nevada Rally winner and factory Honda rider Johnny Campbell. At the drop of the gate, the big Honda of Lewis and Campbell team took the lead. The 125cc Suzuki of john Braash and Craig Schnell was second with the SOOcc Kawasaki of Paul Krause and Ted Hunnicutt third. After 17 minutes, the fourstroke of Lewis and Campbell came booming onto the motocross track with an I8-second lead. Braash and Schnen were next onto the 1.25-mile MX course. The motocross specialists of Braash and Schnell cut nine seconds off the leaders' margin. Over the next two laps the positions stayed the same. Coming off the MX course on lap three the first two teams entered the pils for the final rider change wheel-to-wheel. The Honda Team had the advantage of a larger fuel tank and did not take on fuel as the l2Scc RM of Braash and Schnell did. This allowed Lewis and Campbell to stretch out an IS-second lead to the finish. Krause and Hunnicutt rounded out the top three. 3. Bryan Raleigh (Hon); 4. Bob Rutten (Hon); 5. Scott Ravm (1-lon).
