RJ's truck debut As the magazine editors turn: Cycle News contributor Dean Adams will take over as the editor of American Rmidracing magazine on November 6, replacing former Cycle News associate editor Brian Catterson, who will make a return to Cycle World magazine. ormer multi-time AMA Supercross and National MX Champion Ricky Johnson found out it's a long way from triple jumps and whoop-de-doos on a lightweigPt, two-stroke motoqosser to a three-eighth-mile banked asphalt oval in a 3500-pound, V-eight powered Nf\SCAR SuperTruck. Johnson made his debut in the newest of the NASCAR traveling road shows at Mesa Marin Raceway in Bakersfield, California, driving a Chevrolet pickup truck prepared by Vestar PHOTOS BY MITCH FAIEOMAN Motorsports and backed by Ultra Wheels/Team A.S.E., No Fear Dangerous Sports Gear and Sears Diehard. The seven-time National Champion found the going rough as he lined up behind the likes of stockcar racing stars Ernie {rvan, Ken Schraeder, Geoff Bodine and Todd Bodine, as well as SuperTruck regulars Mike Skinner, Ron Hornaday Jr., and Joe Ruttman. Johnson qualified 21st in the 36-truck field, and finished 25th in the 2oo-lap race. Johnson found out numerous times that "Rubbin' is Racin' " as he worked his way around the hot, slippery track - at times feeling like the ball in a pinball machine. "I can run with these guys, I know I can," Johnson said as he climbed out of the war-weary truck. "But boy, are they good. I have a lot to learn, but I know I can do it." There wasn't a straight piece of sheet metal on Johnson's truck. He had spun and hit the wall, spun and hit the inside guardrail, and then he slipped and slid, hitting other trucks, and other trucks slipped and slid into him. However, his patented smile and positive attitude remained. Since his retirement from motocross, Johnson has raced in the Sports Truck division of the now-defunct Mickey Thompson Off-Road Series, the Baja 500 and other SCORE off-road events, and he most recently captured the Sportsman Division at El Cajon Speedway in Southern California driving his own car.
