DIRT TRACK Barona Speedway SDFTAlAHRMA Dirt Track By Scott Rousseau RAMONA, CA, ocr. 13 he San Diego Flat Track Association capitalized on the extra attention begin given to motorcycle racing in the San Diego area during the weekend of the Del Mar Mile by hosting its own AHRMA-sanctioned dirt track race at Barona Speedway. Some 800 spectators were on hand to watch over 120 riders compete on the banked, sixth-mile oval with several of those riders taking the opportunity to contest more than one class. Stuntman Gary Davis carded victories in the Classic Vintage 500cc OHV750cc Sidevalve class and the Dinosaur cia s with start-to-finish victories over Art Carter. Davis seemed to have the high line wired as he holeshot the main events in both classes while Carter pursued him on the lower line in an attempt to cut the distance between the two. But Davis had momentum on his side, powering his BSA GoLd Star and his Triumph twin to one win each. Rick Cresse ran third aboard a Triumph in the 500cc OHV-750cc Sidevalve division while Matt George eam.ed the same result in th.e Dinosaur class on an Indian Scout. Carter came back to score a win in the 251-600cc Modern Vintage class aboard a Champion-framed Honda, keeping second-place finisher Marvin Moore and third-placed Butch Cohran at bay for the entire IS-Lap main event. Ironman Mickey Alwla played possum in his 50+ heat race, finishing down in the field, but when the main-event win was on the line, Alzola uncorked his vintage Triumph and flat ran away from Jim McMurren and Ken Barrow, who kept each other company en route to second- and third-place finishes, respectively. The $1500 Modern 600cc Pro-class purse even attracted a pair of Grand National regulars in Joe Kopp and Garth 7 (Above) Gary Davis (89T) prepares to leave the line in the SOOcc OHV-7SOcc Sidevaive main event. Davis won the race aboard his hard-tailed BSA Gold Star while Art Carter (4L) ran second. (Above) Carter scored a convincing win In the Modern Vintage 251~ class. (Left) AMA Grend National regular Joe Kopp paid a visit to Barona Speedway and walked away with the Modem 600cc Pro-class victory. Brow, who found the going against some of the local hotshoes to be a tough proposition. In the main event, Brow flashed to the front aboard his bor. rowed, stock-framed Yamaha TTSOO but was quickly displaced by Kopp, who was aboard a Steve Johnson-owned Wood-Rotax. Local fast guy Jesse Sanchez followed in third place and appeared to have more than enough speed to beat the two leaders, but he would never get the chance to fight for the lead as a red flag was flown on the fifth Lap after another local hero, Travis Petton, fell in tum four and was struck in the head by a passing rider. Petton Lay on .the track for several moments, but the gritty youngster finally made it to his feet as the field was set in place for a single-file restart. Sanchez then tried to swoop both Kopp and Brow as the race resumed, but struck Kopp's rear wheel instead and wound up on his head. After yet another restart, Sanchez was then forced to knife his way through the pack to make his way back to third place, and he would run out of time to challenge for the lead as Kopp edged Brow across the finish line for the win. "We were going fast earlier, but we were having trouble in the main event," Kopp said. "It wasn't real tacky in the main, so we knew that we'd have to watch out for Garth on that TT500, because it wasn't a horsepower track. But at least we made a Little extra cash for the trip home." fN Barona Speedway Ramona, California Results:~ober13.199S MORN VINT 250: 1. Brad Holl (Bu1); 2. Steve Gorby (Hon); 3. Art Carter (Bul).
