AVDRA visits Sierra Vista MX By Goldie Photo by Carl Holmquist SIERRA VISTA, AZ., ocr. 8 , T'"""i I-< Q) "E Q) :> o Z 32 The Arizona Vintage Dirt Racers Association Vintage M,otocross Racing season opener took place when the group made its first trip to the Sierra Vista MX fadIity. All who attended were surprised by the warm reception. The A VOM program was run in conjunction with the D+D-promoted CMC series race, Modi5cations were made to the track to have it ready for Sunday's vintage program. Tim Curtis showed everyone the fast way around the track in the Sportsman Intermediate class, (eading Toma Seagrove and Gil Whitaker, both Husky-moun.ted. Ryan Dickson came home fourth on a CZ. jim Wilson was the day's only double winner, using a four-a;toto sweep to earn victories, in the 50+ Novice and Premier Novice divisions. Ken Lusk brought out a mint CZ 125 and took Premier 12Scc-c1ass honors over Mark Hayzlett. Maico 250-mounted Steve Haag was the Hoenshell King of Cartwright's XR Nat'l By Darryl Smith DALLAS, TX, OCT. 1 "Still the king," proclaimed the announcers of Clay Hoenshell's continued dominance at the third annual Cartwright's XR National in Dallas. Hoenshell had litlle trouble taking the Unlim.ited and Stock classes at the Cartwright's Motorcar-sponsored event. "file hot dogs were started backwards in the Unlimited main to give the underdogs a chance. Hoenshell, riding the Cartwright's Motorcarbacked entry, wasted litlle time moving to the front. From his backwards-start position, he raced to second place before one lap was complete. Hoenshell foJlowed Ray Burgess around on the second lap and then made the pass over the tabletop jump. Meanwhile, jim Hutcherson was fending off the advances of Jerry Joiner, who tried to outjump Hutcherson over the tabletop, but Hutcherson cut to the inside of the following sweeper. joiner was on the gas too much and hit Hutcherson's rear wheel. The slight collision was enough to knock Hutcherson wide and Joiner moved underneath and into third. Joiner took ]0 laps to find a way around Burgess who was alone in second. With three laps left Hoenshell was out of joiner's sight and doing nacnaes with regularity. joiner and Burgess rounded out the podium behind Hoenshell. When. the gate dropped on the Stock main, Steve Lahatte easily put his XR into the lead. David Bloyed motored past Lahatle over the big double halfway through the first lap.. Hoenshell slipped by Lahatte on lap two and then passed BIQyed when he missed a gear over the double. Lahatte also got by Bloyed as he had trouble finding a gear. Racing st.yed close as the finishing order was set. Hoenshell's engine began to cut out about mid~race but cleared up before Lahatte got close enough to make a pass. Results STK: 1. Oay H~II; 2. Billy SWttery (KTM\ Noland nips win at Leisure MX By Larry Witmer MEDERlVILLE, [N, OCT. 1 Sean Noland took the overall win over Michael Jones after the two traded mota wins in the 250cc Bdivision at the Leisure Time MX facility. In the first mota of the 250cc B division Michael jones putli.is Yamaha into the lead via the holeshot. Brent Long was in second while Terry johnson, and Michael jones were in close pursuit in third and fourth place. Sean Noland was fifth. jones had his Yamaha dialed through the sand whoops and opened up a two-second lead by the first lap. Noland worked his way into third past johnson and jones going over the 5nish,line jump on the completion of the third lap. Noland then worked the whoops to his advantage, getting past Long for the runner-up slot. Jones took the moto win with a four-second lead over new second-place runner oland. Long finished third with johnson running in the fourth position. Noland came out shooting in the second moto with the holeshot. Long ran second, with jones having to play catch-up from the third spot. johnson and his Yamaha rounded the right-hand comer in the fourth spot. oland was riding a smart ra,ce out front, keeping his pace, and pulling away from Long. On the third lap, jones found an opening and passed Long. capitalizing on Long's miscue through the long sand whoop straightaway. jones closed to the rear fender of the leader Noland, but couldn't find a way past and Noland took the win and the overall by virtue of his better second-moto finish. Long lost sight of the leaders, eventually taking the third spot, whic;h was good enough for third overall. Dustin Pulley took the win in the 60cc (7-11) division. Pulley went wire-to-wire in the opening moto over Mike Ely then passed home early in the second moto and went on to take another win after Ely crashed. Results 30+ A: I, C~ Feist (Yam); 2. Sellards, Brown wash Lincoln Trail Motocross By Merle Acord CASEY, II. ocr. 8 "Can you believe that guy? He drove all night to get here. I really didn't want to see him. I don't need the competition, said series points leader Todd DeHoop of fellow Honda of Troy racing team member, Mike Brown when he saw the Honda rider pull into the pits at Lincoln Trails Motosport Park for round three of the AMAfDirt Shirts Fall Oassic MX Series. Todd's concern over Brown's appearance had merit - BrO\.vn aced one moto in the 125cc Pro-Am ·c1ass and both motos in the 2SOcc Pro-Am division en route to the overall win in that class. Brock Sellards led the 29-man 125cc Pro-Am field through the first tum. Sellards came into this event 20 points down in second place in the series points standing behind Barry Carsten. Brown, on a roc.k·stock, borrowed 125 Honda that ran like a one-off factory model, got mixed up in traffic in the first tum and went down, tweaking his bike. Brown limped under the checkers well out of the money. The early laps of the 3O-minute-plus-two-laF moto had a tight group of Sellards, DeHoop, Todd Sheedy, Robbie Skaggs and j.D. Collins. DeHoop moved in on Sellards, showing a wheel on most comers. But the Team Green protege kept his cool and led the Hudsonville, Michigan rider under the checkers for the win. Skaggs, after a so-so start had gotten around a faoting Todd Sheedy to finish a solid third in front of Matt Maximoff. Skaggs turned in four good moto rides despite four midpack starts. Sellards took up where he had left off in the first moto, running out front through the first tum. "fil~the similarity ceased. Brown managed to keep the wheels in the dirt through the first H
