"1 just kind of pulled away from
everyone when all that stuff was going
on at the beginning," said Summers.
"There was some time left to ride, but I
just didn't really have to race with anybody_ I just rode relaxed and had fun
on the track. It was a perfect track and I
was just having a great time riding my
motorcycle. "
"1 feel like I had a good day," said
West Virginia's Doug Blackwell, the
fourth-place finisher. "I got a decent
start and was staying with everybody.
Summers started to pull away from us
after Plessinger fell. I ran third for a littie bit when Plessinger fell, but after he
went back around me I never passed
him again. I was hoping we would
hook up to catch Freddy Andrews but
he was just a little faster. He caught
Fred but I didn't."
"I got a fourth- or fifth-place start
and really didn't move up or drop back
the whole day," said Pennsylvania's
Duane Conner. "There really wasn't
anybody around me to race with, so
nothing really exciting happened. 1 just
ended up fifth place, which was right
where 1 started."
The AMA allows rider to drop their
two lowest finishes in the National
Hare Scrambles Series. Plessinger and
Smith are both out of "throwaway"
races, which means that neither can
afford a bad finish in either of the last
two rounds, set for Linville, Indiana,_
and Kent, Washington. On net points,
Summers is ahead of Plessinger by
three points, though his gross total is
much greater.
"This is going to be a great battle,"
said Summers in anticipation of the
remaining races. "Rodney is still in
even though he DNFed today, and
Scott's right there, too. They don't have
any throwaways left, but 1 do, but 1
would still like to better some scores in
these last two rounds." If Summers can
win the title it would mark
fourth
career AMA National Hare'Scrambles
Championship.
