fifth. Manley would continue to add to his lead and win the mota by 20 seconds over Wood. Beamer and Perry-Don Pataka, who passed Dyess on the last lap to finish fifth. Manley again led the 22-rider field into the first turn with Wood, Beamer, Perry and Page giving chase. The just-turned-30-year-<>ld Manley pulled away to score the easy win. but behind him a fierce battle was going on between Beamer and Perry. Both riders fought for the third position for the entire four laps with Perry slipping by in the sand portion of the course. Wood held on for the runner-up spot with Perry, Beamer and Mark Bazinet rounding out the top five. BSY-backed Farnell won all four motos in the mini classes. James Stewart was the only rider to keep Farnell in sight in the Supermini class. Results P/W (4-6): 1. Ricky Renner (KTM); 2. Wang Wang Hayes (Yam); 3. Ryan Frase!' (KTM); 4, Jerred Brown (LEM); 5. Davis shines at MARS Asheville Half Mile' Abayou, Thompson top CRC Night Motocross Finale By Greg Robertson PALMDALE, CA. SEPT 30 Gabi Abayou aced both Junior Vet Beginner motos while Gary Thompson went 3-1 to top the 250cc Novice class during the final Californla Racing Oub Saturday-night motocross race of the season at Los Angeles County Raceway. Ken Varney used the power of his Honda CR500 to holeshot the first Junior Vet Beginner moto and run out front for a lap before Abayou outjumped him at the "Kal Guard Tower" to take over the position. Abayou enjoyed a comfortable lead by the midway point over Sean Haworth who Call1-e fr~m a Seventh-place start to pass Varney for second. Haworth slowly reeled in Abayou, and by the white-flag lap had closed to within striking distance. Haworth pulled next to Abayou down a long series of whoops, but Abayou had the better line into the following turn and held him off for the win. Varney held off a hard-charging Kevin Wehr for third at the finish. Haworth got the much-needed second-moto start,.but within half a lap, Abayou was around Varney and dogging the KTM-mounted leader. H took a couple of laps, but Abayou finally sailed past Haworth off the finish-line jump to grab the lead. Abayou didn't put a wheel wrong as he pulled away to a 10-second lead by the end of the moto. Varney kept the big Honda throttle pinned through the whoops to move past Haworth and into second where he would finish. Jimmy Smith came from out of the pack to push Haworth on the final lap and make him work for his third-place finish. Alvin Zalamea and Gary Thompson battled over the 250cc first-mota lead with Zalamea finally getting arolind the fast starter Thomp· son on the fourth circuit of the sand y track. Thompson went down a short time later, but recovered to finish third, sandwiched between Dean Ostrander in secona and Matt Bryan in fourth. Thompson roosted to his second holeshot of the evening ahead of Ostrander and Zalamea as mota two got underway. Zalamea stuffed Ostrander in a comer to move into second and set out after Thompson. It took most of the moto, but Zalamea closed to the back fender of Thompson with two laps remaining. . With the white flag out, Thompson couldn't clear a tabletop jump because of a lapped rider and Zalamea squeaked past and into the lead. Zalamea slid out in the following tum trying to avoid the same lapper. Zalamea was quickly up, but his bike was knocked out of his hands by another lapped rider, allowing Thompson to cruise away for the second-moto and overall wins. Ostrander went 2-2 for second overall. By Ken Lilly Results ASHEVILLE, NC, SEPT. 29 Will Davis continued his winning ways with a 750cc main event-victory during round six of the Motorcycle Asphalt Racing Series, the Carolina Harley-Davidson Dealers Association-promoted event at New Asheville Speedway. In addition to winning $2885 of the $20,000 purse, Davis also took home his fourth AMAMARS number-one plate in the six-year-old series. A talent-filled field of 28 riders showed up to race in three classes - 600, 750 and 883cc. Entrants included AMA Grand National Series regulars Davis, Mike Hacker and full-time road racer I part-time Dirt Tracker Larry Pegram. All three would take home a win before the night was over. In the 750cc main event, Davis got the good start that he needed on the slick, half-mile asphalt oval with Pegram and HaCker in hot pursuit. Davis stretched his early lead to 10 bike lengths by lap six while Hacker faded to a searre third and Pegram dosed on Davis in the final laps. However, Pegram's efforts would only get him to within two bik~ lengths of the Mother Fletcher'slTeam Saddlemen-backed Davis when the checkered flag fell. Pegram went on to collect $258S for his two podium finishes, which included a win over Davis in the 600cc main. event. Hacker was again third. In the 883cc main event, HaCker held off a late-race charge by Donnie Krusinski to win the race. Jl.obert Miller was third. P/W 0.2: 1. Doug Carter (KTM); 2. Garrett Jaennett~ (Yam~ P/W 0.1: 1. Greaves wreaks havoc at Grattan Road Race By Jackl Fisher BELDiNG, MI, SEPT. 16-17 Rad Greaves conquered the CCS weekend at Grattan International Raceway by entering nine races and winning eigh~ some of them back"toback. Currently running 14th in AMA's National 600cc Supersport class, Jicarilla Apache Tribe's Greaves came to race for a cause: The Greater Shiloh Church of God and Christ was to be the appreciative recipient of his winnings, which would total close to $1000. Greaves was set to win both Expert GTU and GTO Saturday. The GTU was a tough race with Honda Canada's Factory A rider, Jeff Williams, dicing with Greaves until 1994 Canadian 250cc GP champion Andy Trevitt forced Williams to the outside in b.Jm one into the slick sealer and out of contention. Williams was able to get back on the bike, but only finished Uth. Meanwhile, Greaves, going through the middle at the same time, got around Trevitt an.d tried to get away. Great Lakes defending champ Absolut~ Racing's Greg Gibson got into the mix and with the displaced Trevitt, went after Greaves. First-time TZ-mounted Gibson, couldn't get around Trevitt, and Trevitt couldn't get around Greaves. Trevitt haunted Greaves to the checkered flag and finally settled for second. In the GTO class, Greaves was disqualified on the wannup lap by crossing the dreaded "yellow line" which is used to prevent bikes coming onto the straightaway from the hot pit and pulling out in front of traffic already at speed. During Sunday's Middleweight GP, Greaves got a terrible start, and was running in fifth until the third lap, when a battle began between him, Trevitt and track ace Chicago Performance's Ken Krebs. Everyone was having trouble between turns four and five, the tricky "Graltan Hump." On the fifth lap, Greaves was able to shake both Krebs and Trevitt to claim first with Krebs in second and Trevitt reluctantly taking third place. In the final race of the day, the Unlimited GP, it was Krebs taking the early lead. Greaves couldn't get around him until Krebs blew the tum in the infamous "Grattan Bowl". Taking advantage, Greaves took the win, with Sean Conrad second, Krebs holding onto third, Williams fourth and Trevitt unable to do better than fifth place. DeHoop dialed at Red Bud MX By Larry Witmer BUOIANAJ'I, ML SEPT. 17 Todd DeHoop rOOsted the 250cc Pro-Am class at the Red Bud MJ( facility during the opening round of the AMA Fall Classic Pro MJ( Series. Brock Sellards gated quickest in the first moto of the 250cc Pro-Am division followed by DeHoop, David Kratz, Barry Carsten, and J.D. Collins. DeHoop wasted little time taking the lead, but he went down after the "Malcolm Smith Tunnel Jump" comer, sending the frontrunn~s scrambling for position while avoiding the downed leader. Carsten came out in the lead, with Sellards, Kratz and Collins in the next three positions. DeHoop quickly remounted in fifth, but wouldn't stay in that position long. Sellards took the lead in the "Apple Orchard" switchbacks while De Hoop moved .past both Kratz and Collins in the "Valley Double Pipe Jump" section and rocketed up "La Rocco's Leap." DeHoop was the only rider to attack the uphill cavity with the speed to catch 80 feet of air and wow the fans as he caught the front-running duo of Sellards and Carsten, who got Sellards for the lead during the fourth lap. DeHoop was continuing to reel in both of the front-runners, and at the halfway point in the moto, DeHoop outpowered Sellards up "LaRocco Leap" for second place. l!') 0\ 0\ ,....; ..n C'l l-< OJ ..a o .... u o 41
