place behind Knudsen, which was good enough for one point. If GoUob had settled for that, he was through, but the Pole inexplicably dived under Knudsen on the second bend and dumped him into the safety fence. GoUob was excluded from the rerun, that one moment costing him so dearly. But as Gollob led the runoff from the gate with Smith close behind and Boyce back in third, a reprieve looked to be on for the Pole, who had caused so much controversy in this year's series. Boyce, though, produced two pieces of magic . within the very first lap, rounding Smith on the back straightaway and then diving inside Gollob on the fourth turn to take the lead and seventh place overall. Meanwhile, Smith was climbing all over Gollob's exhaust but couldn't find a way through - until the very last bend. Gollob left the tiniest of gaps on the inside. For the rest, their world-title hopes have been dashed until the 1997 season. (Left) Brit Gary Havelock (Inside, left) leads Denmark's Tommy Knudsen (Inside, right) In heat one. Both Havelock and Knudsen qualified for the 1996 Grand Prix Series. (Below) (Left to right): Cox, Adams and Peter Karisson offer a smile at the victory ceremony. There may be a future world champion among them. The day, though, belonged to Adams, a cut above the rest, who along with the other seven qual ifiers will take his place alongside World Champion Hans Nielsen, Tony Rickardsson, Sam Ermolenko, Greg Hancock, Billy Hamill, Chris Louis, Henka Gustafsson and World Under 21 Champion Jason Crump in next year's series.
