Lucky Strike Suzuki's Scott Russell will compete in an exhibition race in Sugo, Japan, on October 22. The 500cc exhibition race will be held in conjunction with the penultimate round of the Japanese National Championship, which two years ago switched to using superbikes rather than GP bikes. Russell will race against the factory Hondas, with potential riders including Shinichi Itoh and Tadayuki Okada, the Marlboro Yamaha with Norifumi Abe aboard, and a Cagiva to be ridden by Nobuatso Aoki, another Grand Prix regular. Russel! sees the race as another opportunity to get more miles on the Suzuki RGvSOO. "1 knew it would be hard to adapt to a GP bike, and while I'm up to speed, 1 still need to learn a lot more about life at the limit," Russell said. "It's not so much that a fuJJ 500 is hard to ride, but that its limits are way beyond anything any other bike can teach you. It's capable of a lot, but it's also very unforgiving. Right now, I want to get all the practice I can at getting the most out of the Lucky Strike Suzuki, so I'm real glad to have this extra chance." Kenny Roberts Jr. tested a Marlboro Yamaha YZR500 for the first time on Monday, October 9, at the Monternelo Circuit in Barcelona, Spain, the day after the Catalonian Grand Prix. Roberts Jr. ran times in the one-minute, L() 48-second range, times which would 0\ have qualified him among the top pri~ vateers. "I've had more fun today than in the whole year on my 250," Roberts said after the test. Others testing at the track were Lucky Strike Suzuki's Scott Russell, who was joined in the test by Brit Terry Rymer (Russell's teammate Daryl Beattie had left to go hunting in Tanzania with Kevin Schwantz); and a host of journalists who were riding Michael Doohan's title-winning Honda NSR500.
