PwenU DIRT TRACK Continued from pa~12' The only real racing to be found on the- track in the late stages of the main event was found in a four-man battle for the eighth spot where Pegram, Kopp, Springsteen and Varnes duked it out. Pegram appeared to be gaining an advantage on the other three as the fight raged on: But in the end, just as he did at similar "heavy" hali miles like Harrington, Delaware, and Lima, Ohio, it was Parker who flat left the competition with their tongues hanging out, and the reigning champion provided the fans with a bit of excitement as he wheelied his XR750 the length of the front straightway while taking the checkered flag to ceremoniously claim an unofficial "king of the cushion tracks" title. Carr, Davis, King and Atherton maintained a 20-bikelength separation as they crossed the finish line in that order. Evans led Coolbeth across for sixth. Pegram prevailed over Springsteen and Kopp for eighth place As the Grand National season draws to a close at the upcoming Del Mar, the only milestones left for Parker lie in his chance at equaling his own record of 10 victories in a single season and upping the career win tally to 70. And with yet another Pomona victory under his belt, Parker may be looking forward to the final mile of the year, but not, he says, for either of those reasons. "It will be worth nine grand to win that race," Parker said. ''I'm here to make the cash." WORLDSPORTS 24TH ANNUAL WINTER NATIONAL OLYMPICS ~. Prior to Denver, the 39-year-old Springsteen had a 33-point lead on 19year-old Mike Hacker, 171-138, in a battle of young vs. old. But just when it seemed as though the aged warrior had his youthful opponent on the ropes, Hacker struck a painful blow when Springer wasn't looking by riding to his first National victory at. Denver, closing the gap to just 13 points. Hacker then sent Springer reeling with another victory at the Springfield Mile while Springsteen could do no better than fifth, narrowing the rift to just six points. Another win by Hacker at the Sacramento Mile combined with a seventhplace finish by Springsteen brought his point differential to just one. The bludgeoning continued at Pomona. Although Modesto Harley-Davidson's Matt Wait got in a few licks of his own by running away to a ho-hum victory in the 883cc main event, aU eyes were on Hacker and Springsteen, whose chance at a one-on-one confrontation with the kid was spoiled by his own Bartels' teammates Eric and Ben Bostrom as well as ate "Gator" Wait. Eric Bostrom jumped to the initial lead in the 17-man, 12-1apper before brothers Matt and Nate Wait came forward to make trouble for the younger Bostrom. Matt Wait got by and pulled clear of Eric Bostrom while Nate Wait fell back into a battle with Hacker. The title-hungry Virginian promptly put away both Nate Wait and Eric Bostrom to pull into second, and hope. His hopes were realized as Springsteen was mired in a three-way battle with Jess Roeder and Ben Bostrom. Try as he might, the former three-time Grand ational champion could not shake his younger opponents loose, and ---·----Continued on page 29 Simply Ilu! heslfor your hike. EKchain .,aONDA.
