By Mickey locke Photo by Julie McDonald BELLINGHAM, W SEPT. 10 A., Brian Downing pulled out all the stops at his home track at Hannegan Raceway in Bellingham, Washington. Downing turned pro just last month. This race proved to be quite costly, ending up in a blown crank on his CR12S, and a sheared-off hub on his YZ250. But none of these catastophes got in the way of three moto wins and some outstanding racing. In the first 125cc moto Sean Naslund, Jamie Richardson and Travis Ross put up a good fight, but Downing finished first with Naslund and Richardson behind. The second moto was basically a rerun of the first, with Downing finishing ahead of the rest of the class. The frrst 250cc moto was a different story, as Anthony Gay) Whipple grabbed the holeshot, followed by Scott Steffy and Downing. Steffy and Downing came out of the woods with Downing in the lead, furiously trying to close the gap between him and Whipple. The moreexperienced Whipple held him off through the whoops, but once again the woods were good to Downing, who came out in the lead in the fourth lap. Whipple repassed Downing halfway into the white-Bag lap, but when they emerged from the woods, Downing was again in the lead, and Billy Binckley was closing in. With Binckley pressuring Whipple, and Downing lengthening his lead, Whipple ran out of time and finished second to Downing's lead, nearly getting passed by Binckley at the finish. Steffy pulled the 2S0c<. Pro main-event holeshot, with Whipple second and Binckley in third. Downing moved into third on the back stretch Qf the first lap. Downing went down hard in lap two, shearing off his rear hub and ending his race day. Whipple caught Steffy in the whoops section and passed Into the lead. Binckley had caught up to the leaders and was ready to do battle with Steffy for sec!,nd. Binckley gained the ad'vantage on Steffy but had a minor catastrophe which allowed Steffy to repass and keep second place all the way to the finish. 125 INT: I. Trevor Oeyo (Han); 2. Williams storms Thunderhlll Raceway By Jackie Jouret WlLWWS, CA, SEPT. 10 Joe Bret Williams fook top honors in the Formula Pacific class at Thunderhill Raceway. Braking Fonnula Pacific Challenge Series dominator Cal Rayborn had built a sizable lead' in this seventh round before tos ing it down the tarmac on the seventh lap. A simultaneous incl· dent at the other end of the track brought out the red flags. Rayborn and his Cycle Cear Kawasaki had sustained too much damage to make the restart, leaving the door wide open for another rider to take home the trophy. Steve Rapp led the riders after the flag, with Williams and Rob Mesa hot on his tail. By the end of the first lap, Mesa had put his FZRl000 ahead of Rapp's CSX-R, with Williams taking over second in turn two on the second lap. Williams came right up on Mesa's rear tire in the Cyclone, but Mesa powered away from Williams' ROO on the track's fast sweepers. On lap three, Williams got ahead of Mesa in Turn ine, only to have Mesa get by on ThunderhilJ's long straightaway. Williams tried again in the Cyclone, but Mesa closed the door and killed Williams' drive. The move did not diminish Williams' determination, howeve.r, as he came right back on lap five to take the lead in the tight turn-two/turn-three area. Mesa powered past him again on the straight, but Williams repeated the move with success and got enough distance to seal the win. Mesa, the only potential threat to Rayborn for the championship, ettled into a secure second ahead of Rapp. Rapp did a terrific job in the race's closing stages, taking the la t podium position in a hectic final lap. Anthony Lupo took the win in the 750cc Production class over Glenn Filshie, Jon Burtness, and Don Creene. Ken Hill won 600cc Production by less than a bike length over Jim Moore, with Erik Schnackenberg not far back in third. Williams put his ROO in front again in 750cc Superbike, beating the Suzukis Qf Tom Aquino and James Randolph. Billy Vassiliou took his first win in 600cc Superbike ahead of Schnackenberg and Moore. C8Mguler HOWSTER. CA, SEPT. 16-17 Robert Roeh1k and Jim Phillips took home intermediate wins on Saturday and Sunday at round three of the Over the Hill Cang National Series in Hollister. All 23 riders in the four Intermediate motos we.re never more than a few seconds apart. At the moto-one start it was all Alex Chellew who grabbed the lead and never looked back. Jim Phillips pulled into second followed by Marty Westerman. Rounding out the top five on lap one were Bill Schults and Rob Roehlk. A tight battle ensued between Westerman, Roehlk and Schults that lasted for a couple of laps until Roehlk got around Schults and went after Westerman. Moving up to join the fun was Dave Zollo who got by Schults on lap four. On lap five Roehlk and Zollo passed Westerman and they duked it out for the rest of the moto. When it was over, Chellew took the win with Phillips second and Roeh1k third. In moto two Don Demyan quickly took an uncontested lead. Chellew was next, followed by Westennan and Roehlk and Phillips. By the finish Roehlk had moved into second and Phillips was third. The next morning, Dave Zollo grabbed the holeshot and boogied. Behind him were Saun- ders, Roehlk. Jim Basgall and Dave Rodriguez, in that order. Rodriguez dropped back to sixth while Dave Harrell moved into fifth and the race got tighter from there. For the next 4 laps, Roehlk, Phillips and Harrell would battle it out until the checkered Bag came out and it would end in that order. In the fin..",oto Demyan hammered the holeshot, followed by Chellew, Phillips and Westennan. Roehlk got tangled up in the first tum and was in ninth place at the end of the first lap. On lap two Chellew took the lead from Demyan who was soon passed by Phillips, and on lap four Philips took the lead from Chellew. It ended with Phillips, Chellew, Harrell comprising the top three, while Roeh1k finished in sixth. It was once again proven that consistency wins as Phillips took the overall over Roehlk. 'im Clark pins down win at East Mountain Motocross ByJbnW..MORIARTY, NM, SEPT. 17 A teenager who is a championship-ea1iber highschool wrestler burst out of the minibike class and showed his older competitors he's not a lightweight by winning in the 125 B c1ass at East Mountain Sports Park just east of Albuquerque. Fifteen-year-old Ronnie Oark gated well in the first moto and found himself in second place at the first turn behind holeshot artist and Honda rider Shayne Kendall, 17. Oark dogged Kendall for the next minute, then shot past him when Kendall bobbled on the "Ten Commandments," a series of 10 man-made jumps. In the second 125 B moto, Oark shot into the lead before turn one. He was seriously cha1~ lenged only by a regular B-c1ass winner, Jon Stewart. When Stewart crashed, Clark went on to win his first first-place on a big bike. He said he is finished as a mini racer. In the 12Scc, 2S0cc and Open A classes, Kawasaki-mounted Isaiah Johnson, 16, and Suzuki-mounted Ryan Oark, 17, staged another of their spectacular duels. One of the two riders is almost certain to. win or finish second in every moto they race. On this day they were the fastest riders on the trade Each won a 125cc mota; Johnson won both 250cc motos, with Oark second in each; and Oark won both Open A motos, with Johnson second.
