Something new was added to the Short Track: a mini version of the TI was run for the 100cc guys. In the 100cc A class, Tony Meiring lost it in a sharp right-hander but quickly remounted and got onto the tail of Engines Only's Frank Nye, pitting Meil:ing's youth and enthusiasm against Nye's age and experience. Nye took the win. Frank Nye Jr. finished first in the 100cc B class, for father-son trophies on the night. Vintage C riders had some exciting moments during the heat race when Marty Waister lost all brakes and took the uphill exit route at a very high speed, leaving the way clear for Chris Marquis to take the win. The main event saw Weisler back with brakes, but the finish was the same: Marquis first, Weisler second, • Results Mike McKee (99) leads the 250cc A class Into the first tum at TreU-Way Speedway. Raymond Bowers bad a good moto and was consistent for third while Branson, Mark Tilley and Parsons rounded out the top five. Brian Brown and Tommy Harrison had a two-moto showdown for top honors in the 12Sec Novice class with Brown coming out on top. Winsett wallops Trail-Way ST By Len Breech , ~ ~ l-; ClJ -£ u o 54 IiANOVER, PA, SEPT. 16 Todd Winsett helped Trail-Way Speedway begin to wind down its 1995 short track season by taking a pair of wins in the 600cc Pro and Sportsman finals. Ken Mohler jumped into the 600cc Pro lead over Rick Winsett Jr., Todd Winsett and Phil Libhart. Rick Winsett dropped to third on the second lap after taking a slight infield diversion. Todd Winsett slipped into the lead as they hit the third tum on the fourth lap and Rick Winsett took second on the sixth lap as Mobler began to drop back with brake problems. As the raindrops began to get a little bigger, Rick Winsett grabbed the 600cc Sportsman lead from Phil Libhart and Todd Winsett. Todd Winsett took second on the third lap, as Libbart drifted a little high in tum two. For the rest .,f the race, Todd Winsett shadowed his cousin Rick, who held the inside line tightly. On the last lap, Todd blasted by him on the outside of tum two for the lead and the win. Also taking a pair of wins was Bob Sweeten. who won the 600cc A final and was awarded the 30+ win as the remnants of a tropical stann at the start of the finals forced the races to be called with four finals left. Bob Babcock topped Joe Gately in the 750cc final while Gately later used the nusty track conditions to take the 40+ win, and Mike McKee was awarded the 250cc A- victory with a hotly contested heat win. With the exception of Paul Amson's second l2Scc win, most of the Amateur riders who had been winning for most of the season again topped their respective classes. Jake Wachter and Jared Mees topped the S5cc classes, with Corey Honnes and Jake Johnson winning the 65 ahd 85cc classes. Bruce Ingram edged Joey Zydinsky for the 250cc B win and John Henderson easily outdistanced the 600cc B class. Results 600 A: 1. Bob Sweeten (Rtx); 2. Pauley frustrated Rob Damron lap after lap in the Open A Main with Mark Key in third place. No doubt about it, Pauley goes fast and wben he's on the wire irs really difficult to get around him. Damron tried high lines and low lines but nothing worked. Key was behind Damron keeping up, but nothing he tried was working either and this left him in third at the checkered. The Pro-Am Main looked very much the same but Key was the one banging on Pauley's rear wheel, while Bob Seay was trying to make his moves from third place. Gerald Tenerat hung out in fourth and made life miserable for all. He was right there and the guys in first, second and third knew it, but tbe top spots belonged to Pauley, Key, and Seay resp.ectively. All the riders who went to the Amateur Nationals at 1-95 are home and back on the Lod.i campaign trail. The Open C Main was testimony that tbe Japanese were back with a vengeance. Scott Whitaker took the checkered but Yuniko Hirao and Mitsunoti Takeuchi were letting him know they were there. It was almost a photo finish with Whitaker taking the win and the two visitors from the east second and third. The Yet A Class was a real hair raiser with a couple of restarts before the boys were able to get it together. Matt Gomez, Bob McDonnell and Larry Andres pulled the oid freight-train trick, and finished in that order. PRO-AM EX: 1. Lonnie Pauley (RtJc); 2. Mark Key (W-R); 3. Robert Seay (Rue); .... SEPT. 8 Gary Hicks and Shawn McConnell put the "fine" in "fine tuning" as they won the SCratch and Handicap Mains on the final night of the Costa Mesa regular season. Hicks, who has not been around for much of the season, has not lost his touch as he was a direct transfer into the main from the Semi. Brad Oxley, Charlie Venegas and Steve Lucero also came from the Semis, while McConnell did it the hard way, winning the Last Chance. Venegas drew the pole with Lucero in position two, McConnell in three, Hicks in four and Oxley in five. It was a straight-up start with everyone getting to the first tum at about the same time. As they came out of turn two, Venegas got into trouble with a real tank slap per. His skill kept him from going down, but he did lose some positions. As they finished the first lap it was Hicks, Oxley, Lucero, McConnell and Venegas. For the next three laps the race was like a freight train, and when the checkered £lag fell the order was unchanged. In the Handicap Main, Randy Beddow (rom short yardage led for two laps before McConnell from long yardage put enough pressure on him to make him go high. McConnell took over the lead and Hicks and Lucero were right behind him. with Oxley and Jesse Finch staying close. Gary Ackroyd, running in the back of the pack, went down on the sixth lap, and as McConnell came around he was blocked and the ref called for the red. Unlike Scratch racing where the race can be called if half the laps have been completed, the Handicap Main must be run in its entirety. On the single-file restart McConnell kept his low, tight line and held off Lucero and Oxley for the win. All the sidecars were on hand for their final tuneup before the Sidecar National at the end of the month. The team of Lewis and Macy got the best start but went high in two and that was all Dean and Steele needed to take their hand-built Godden V-twin sidecar to ihe head of the pack. From there on out it was the "Thunder from Down Under" holding school. Lewis and Macy looked to have a lock on second but Gardner and Lynce, the reigning National Champs, edged them out at the flag by the width of a tire. John DeFries from the lO-yard-line led the Support Main for three laps before Ken Hansen and Randy Skinner got by to take over the two top spots. Rounding out the field was Jason Daniels. Tom Hamilton won the Support B, topping Rudy Maresca and Jim Mustain. Results SCRATCH: I. Gary Hick!! (Wes); 2. Brad Oxley (Wes); 3. Steve Luce:ro (Cdn); 4. Shawn McConnell (Gdn); 5. Ingles strike again at Diamond Raceway Short Track By Clay Light ROSEBURG, OR, SEPT. 10 Bob and Bo Ingle continued to TUle, defeating all opponents at Diamond Raceway. Suzuki rider Bo Ingle has dominated the 80 and 125cc classes all season long in southern Oregon. In fact, he's only logged two losses in the season. So, if you would crown any rider King of Diamond Raceway, it would be either 15-year-old Bo, or his dad Bob, who has won every Open main event here this season. Qualifying had the elder Ingle beat fellow former AMA Junior Pro Bob Klum for a win in the Open class, wbile the younger Ingle and Sean Light were 80cc winn.e'rs. Bo Ingle and Damien Saltzman won 125cc preliminaries ·on the tenth-mile oval. The first main event of the d.ay had Bo Ingle, who has a convincing points lead in the Oregon State 80cc Expert class over Saltzman and Light, much thanks to number-one plate holder Chad Feeley's absence, jump ahead of the 80cc Expert main event. But Ingle got an abrupt surprise when Saltzman, riding a Honda, shook off Light and set out after Ingle, nearly pulling off the upset of the season. bu t falling short at the completion of the IS-lap final. Light finished a close third. Bo Ingle led Saltzman in the 125cc A main, making it a near repeat of the 80cc Expert-class runoff. Luckily for both, 12Sec State Champion Beau Brown scratched from the program, allowing Ingle yet another win after he held off Saltzman, and ultimately, brother Travis, who inherited second late in the race when Saltzman fell. Cliff Helms shot to the head of the field in the Open A main, but the Crescent City, Californian's lead would last only a lap as Helms left a hole for Ingle to sneak a wheel past and grab the lead. Klum also displaced Helms and then set sail in hot pursuit of Ingle. Ingle slipped off the groove and was nearly caught by ](Jum, but with three laps remaining his lead was again secure and would carry him to a victory, keeping his win streak intact. Results OPEN: 1. Drew T-Bones Fuller in Phoenix Off Road By Tony TaUler PHOENlX. AZ. SEPT. 17 Rob Drew snatched the Pro Bike purse from "TBone" Fuller's grasp at Whiplasb Motorsport's Off Road Wars on a pleasant Saturday evening in Phoenix. Fuller dominated the heat races, forcing MTEG Ultracross expatriate Drew into an unaccustomed "first loser" position. However, when the chips were down and the race was on the line, Southern California rider Drew dug deep into himself, drew close to Fuller who, sud.denly under pressure, dropped his CR a scant 50 feet from the white flag. Rob immediately took full advantage of Fuller's fall and rode on for the suddenly-uncontested victory. Whiplash's motorcycle starts were of an unusual format: Riders were positioned perpendicular to the track with their clutch hands on their helmets. When the flag dropped, all riders had to make an immediate left-hand pivot to enter the track proper. Therefore, qualifying position was of the utmost importance and the advantage in the money Main was Fuller's. (First-heat positions were determined by a drawing.) Fuller had made mincemeat of the course for almost all of the Main before snatching defeat from the jaws of victory with a bobble in a tight, bermed hairpin. Fuller recovered in time to defend second place from Tom Stuckey, who
