Jeff Pestana (54) defends his lead from
Dean Mstaon (01) In the first 250cc Pro
mota at the Los Banos Fairgrounds.
Pestana eventually finished first, but Rick
Ryan (81) won the claas.
some of the tightest competition all year long
with a new class winner at almost each event.
The start of the race saw Damon Harvey get the
holeshot on hjs Suzuki with Doug Vickery,
lmanishi and Dennie Burke following.
Harvey jelled to a slight lead as Imanishj
had made his way to the second spot trying to
keep close to Harvey. Vickery was in a battle
with fellow Yamaha rider Donnie Hough as
both were keeping Burke on his Suzuki in fifth.
Up front, Harvey was starting to pull out a
five-bike lead over Imanishi by the halfway
point of the race. Vickery had broken away from
the battle over third and put his head down to
make a run to catch Imanishi, leaving the fight
over fourth to Burke and Hough. Three laps,
remained and lmanishi started his run to catch
Harvey, who had been cruising in the lead.
lmanishi was now reeling in Harvey, and
with two laps to go, had crept closer to the
tailpipe while looking for the pass. Heading
down the short straight to turn five, lmanish.i
stuck a wheel up under Harvey but had to back
off for the uphill comer. At the exit of tum five
the Kawasaki rider again got a wheel inside of
Harvey and dived deep into tum six. This time
he made the pass and also got the drive to open
a slight lead down the back straightaway.
Harvey was not about to give up after leading for SO long and pressured Imanishi at every
point on the course. With the wave of the white
£lag, the two riders were glued to. each other as
Harvey tried to stay with the Kawasaki. Imanishj held his line and went on to take his first
win of the season. Vickery was alone in third
while Hough got the better of Burke for fourth.

Ryan Rules at Los Banos MX
By Mark Hawkins
LOS BANOS, CA. SEI'T.JO
Ricky Ryan was first to the checkered £lag in 6ve
of the six motos he competed in during round
two of the GFl Fall Series North, presented by
the California Motocross Association at the Los
Banos Fairgrounds.
At the drop of the gate in moto one in the
250cc Pro class, it was the Oawson Motorsports'
rider jeff Pestana who grabbed the holeshot and
the early lead. Following Pestana were Dean
Matson, Tyson VohJand, Rick Ryan and CMA's
Rookie of the year Nathan Wood. On lap two
Matson had some trouble navigating the
approach to the midsection tabletop jump and
ended up nff the track and off the bjke. After
remounting. Matson would get back on the track
in seventh position. Pestana opened up a huge
lead over the second-place Vnhiand, who had
his hands full with Ryan. Woods, riding a consistent fourth, lost control of his bike through
the rocker ~ection and then looped out on the
double jump at the end of the sectinn. Getting
up slowly, and having difficulty starting his
machine, he had to settle for a DNF in moto one.
Then on the next lap, it waS Vohland's turn to
dump it in the rockers, allowing Ryan and Matson to move into second and third. At the
halfway point it was Pestana with a commanding lead over Ryan who had a comfortable lead
over Matson.
They would slay in this order to the checkered £lag with Pestana looking very strong at the
end of the race. Ryan would hold on for second,
followed by Matson. Fourth would go to CMA's
number-one Pro for 1996, Ben Vitale, and fifth
would go to the hard-charging Vohland.
Vohland found himself with the holeshot in
moto two and was followed by Ryan, Matson,
and moto-one winner Pestana. Vohland rode
trong but was not able to stay ahead of the veteran Suzuki rider Ryan for more than a couple
of laps. P~stana had his work cut out for him
because of his mediocre start. At the halfway
point, Pestana was able to power by Matson's
Yamaha in the tricky mjdsection doubles.
By this time Ryan had opened up a lead that
would remain wlchallenged for the remainder
of the moto. Vohland soon found himself being
pressured by Peslana and, on the white-Rag lap,
danced rus way past the struggling Vohland for
second. Vohland would hold on to third. Finishing in fourth was Matson and rounding out the
top five was Dustin Bloomfield.
Overall in the class, the win went to Ryan,
second to Pestana, third to Matson, fourth to
Vohland and fifth to Vitale,

Baker, Vargo top
Indiana State Motocross
By Larry WItmer
ROCHESTER, IN, SEPT. JO
john Baker manhandled the 250cc Expert division while Nicholas Vargo took the win in the
popular 80cc (7-11) division during the opening
round of the Jndiana State Championship
motocross serie at the Fulton County Fairgrounds.
Robert Davis ripped the holeshot during the
open.ing moto of the 2SOcc Expert division, but
the lead didn't last long. Davis and his. Throttle
jockey /Stoughton's RM did cnmplete lap one in
the point position while gning through the 6nish-line rockers, but second-placed jeff Ulshaffer
lost control of his Honda, throwing it away in
the rockers and taking Davis down with him.
Matt Harris took over the lead before Backer
charged from fourth place past Harris to open
up a .small advantage that he would hold tn the
checkered Rag.
Baker carne out with the holeshot in the second moto while Harris suffered a terrible start.
Baker demolished the field early with a killer
lead. UJshaffer was in second, with Gayheart
close in third. Steve Kaylor was in fourth on the
opening lap, but was zapped by the hard-charging Harris before the end of the opening lap.
Harris continued to move through the front-runners, passing Gayheart on the 6fth lap for thrrd
place with an inside pass. Harris didn't have to
work hard to make the second-place pass on
UJshaffer, who ran off the track while gelling
pressured by Harris.
Baker cruised home for the win on his Lake
City Honda/ Axo/Throttle jockey /Spectra OakleyCR.
In the 80cc (7-11) division, Travis Sprong
started out the class with the holeshot over
Aaron Yoder, Aaron Williams, and Vargo, who
in tum used the south rockers to pass Williams
and Yoder to move into second before the completion of the opening lap.
Vargo used the south~rocker inside line to
capture the lead over Sprong on the second lap.
Vargo maintained the lead, but Sprong kept the
heat on him. At the finish it was Vargo three seconds ahead of Sprong. Trurd went to Max Pitts.
Sprong continued his holeshot skills in the
start of the second moto, but Vargo used his
favorite passing area, the south-rocker section~
to get by Spnng on the second lap. The pass
made Sprong try to reclaim the lead down the
next straightaway. The fast, whooped straight
gnt Sprong, pitching the rear end frnm side to
side, and threw him over the high side. It was a
nasty-looking crash, and Sprong remounted
slowly.
Vargo cruised across the finish line for the
overall win by a huge margin. Sprong shook the
cobwebs out to card second.
