Hans, the overall winner of Whiplash's Sonoy.., Mexico, Hare and Hound m April, appears to be game for virtually any venue. In the Expert race, jason ~dsong had his hands lull with Cochise Cycle s sometimes-Pro rider Ron "Da Kine" Sandlin, a transplanted orth Shore surfer riding out of Fort Huachuca. Sandlin easily won his heat races but then fell afoul of Birdsong, who really knew how to feather his clutch. Tory Long gave a struggling Phil "Corporal" Klinger the good shot for third place. Brandon Ra.'CI. Howell hammers Old Timers at LACR Motocross By Greg Robertson PALMDALE. CA, SEPT 16. Charles Howell pirked up yet another win in the Old Timers Motocross Association's Amateur class with a 1-1 score during California Racing Club's Saturday-night motocross at Los Angeles County Raceway. Howell made his intentions clear by nailing the first-moto holeshot aboard his new '96 VZ25O. Charles Watanabe ran second for half a lap before Ruthann Renaux ouljumped him to take over the position. Richard ~aler was on the move, coming from his near-last-place start to hold down third with only a lap completed. Howell continued to cruise out front as Renaux pulled away from Bealer in an attempt to keep the leader in sight. As the remaining number of laps shrunk, so did Howell's lead. Renaux closed to within striking distance, but she couldn't come up with that little extra to find a way around and had to settle for a close second at the checkers. Bealer kept john Craft at bay in the final few laps to take third. Watanabe's second-mota lead lasted a lap before both Howell and then Renaux went by. Once again Bealer suffered a poor start, but had made his way from dead last to third behind Watanabe on the opening lap. Renaux zeroed in on Howell, while Bealer caught Renaux, and the three front-runners separated themselves from the park. For the next five laps it was anybody's goess who was going to win the second moto. At one point Bealer passed Renaux and dogged Howell for a couple of laps before Renaux outdragged him down a short straight to move back into the runner-up position. With the white flag out, Renaux gave it everything she had. She pulled next to Howell numerous times. showing him her front fender. but Howell hung tough and ended up greeting the checkers with a two-bike-Iength lead. Bealer ate Renaux's roost aU the way to the finish for a dose third. Craft put a last-lap pass on john Aanders for fourth. Results P/W B--Z; 1. WI.'5~ fl3rrish (LEM); 2. Doug GUier (KtM); J.
