An AMA 0-37 Dual Sport Adventure starting in the Barton Flats area of the San Bernardino National Forest. 6th. <-.A,ulua.Q . '~. .. :-J Sunday, Oct. 1, 1995 Okubo on top at Brainerd RR By Paul Jemes BRAINERD, MN, AUG. 2h-27 Bryan Okubo and his fleet of well-tuned Yamaha TZs and TZRs dominated the Central Roadracing Association's sprint racing action at Brainerd International Raceway. Top Line Cycle's Okubo served notice he was the man to beat by nabbing four outright wins over the weekend in Lightweight Superbike, Ultralight Grand Prix, Lightweight Grand Prix and Middleweight Grand Prix. He also posted three additional top-five finishes. Not a bad weekend, despite having problems feeding the pavement in the Unlimited Grand Prix. Fellow pilot Jason Lanigan chalked up another victory for the two-strokers by winning the Framstad Cup handicap shootout aboard his Honda RSl25. A CRA original, Framstad Cup qualifiers are determined by their overall (Novice and Expert combined) placing in Saturday's trophy dash. Handicaps are determined by averaging lhe lap times of class winners from the trophy dashes. The race is just five laps long with the Ultralight bikes starting first. Approximately 30 seconds after that, the lightweight bikes take off. in hot pursuit followed 30 seconds later by the Middleweight through Unlimited bike riders, who charge off to see if they can run down the little guys. The race usually develops into a three-way battle of the leaders from each group with the smaller bikes trying to hold off the cha rge of the larger bikes at the end, often coming down to the last tum of the last lap and a dash to the checkered flag for an exciting photo finish. Not this time. Lanigan of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, had the field covered for five laps as he smoked through the comers and down the long, lonely BlR straights. In fact, Ultralight fast guy Tom Maier held down second place aboard his Suzuki GS 500 through the quick sprint, while two Lightweight racers aboard Yamaha FZR 400s, Mark Dargis and Novice hot-shoe Scott Head, finished third and fourth, with Yamaha YZF 750 pilot John Jacob nipping at his heels.
